Woo Hoo!!! Just ordered mine online. Total was $143.09 They better not run out of stock!!!! Im so excited ! w00t!

Thanks to all for bringing this deal to my attention. Went ahead and braved it through the falling snow here in Buffalo, but was first in line, and got this GREAT deal to end the year. Ah yes, 2000, the year of deals! Woo-hoo!

The Best Buy in my area, Cleveland, Ohio, has this drive for the same price as Comp USA: $130 - $30 rebate = $100. No need to fart around with price matching ect. Enjoy.

I just got mine also, it was the last one they had also. The guys had to look around in the back for it. Phew, i'm glad I didn't waste any time to get it 🙂

Well guess what I waited outside a CompUSA in Columbus, OH for about 20 minutes this morning. About 10 others were there too. Not surprising to me they were already out of the drives, but they had 2 good alternatives.
1. They were rainchecking the iomegas, at the same price
2. They were selling the same speed TDK for 150.00, which I know is little more then 100.00, but hey it's a TDK. I picked up one of those and put in a raincheck for the iomega(Plextor). Thanks, all you guys for putting me in the Know about this.

My local CompUSA had about 40 drives, plus suprisingly offered rainchecks to those that missed out. I woke up early (For a Sunday at least) & joined the other 25+ people in line and got mine 😉

Good luck to all the other Anandtecher's trying to get in on this deal 😀

I got to the NJ store about 1 hr late and they still had ~10 drives left. Well, I picked up two. One for me and one for my sis. Sweet deal.

i decided to go to best buy (which is right next to compusa here in ann arbor) to see if they had any of these drives and to get them to price match compusa. they had three in stock (compusa had six) and interestingly, when the guy scanned the CD-RW drive, it was already ringing up $129.

i was about to ask about their 110% price match policy when the guy went ahead and price matched the drive for $99! so now i got the drive for $99, AND he gave me the rebate form and a rebate receipt so i can still get the $30 MIR. so: $105.99 (after tax) minus $30 MIR equals a total out the door cost of $75.99.

obviously, all best buys aren't going to do this. i think i just got lucky. and this is an awesome deal anyway. thanks!

Just a note for those buying it online.

My ad says

*While supplies last. Quantities limited to stock on hand. Quantities limited. 1 per customer. Not available via mail-order/internet.

Hopefully it goes through for you but I wouldn't put all your eggs in one basket.

Most of that text is all by the computer for "FREE". (what a joke)

I got two at the B&M so such much for the limit. The web site clearly states 99.99 after rebate and would take the order for more than one. I did not actually order one though since I was willing to "risk" it at the B&M.

mikef208,

I just got back from the one on Sawmill road. When I heard of the deal Friday, the closest store that had them was in Dayton -- so I drove down and picked up two.

Anyway, I went in this morning and he credited back the purchase of the two drives and re-sold them to me at the discounted price.

In all -- a sweet deal.

I just checked the website. They still have it listed at 99 bucks and shipping in 24 hours. At the bottom, it says :
Pricing and availability information is up-to-date as of 12/31/2000 8:39:17 AM. Listed prices are national prices, and actual retail prices may vary by market. Products are sold on a first come, first serve basis.

According to that, it states that they had some availabe as of 8:39Am this morning. If you got your order in before then, you should be golden. It also does not state anything about a limit on the web site.

Austin, TX - North store on Research Blvd had about 30 left as of 10:45 AM CST. They were going fast. Two employees told me they already had theirs.

i harassed some win 98 reps in that store on sawmill road once...

that offer may not have been good for internet orders, in which case there was a seperate but identical offer on the internet at the same time. at least, thats what compusa thinks, and they're the ones who are selling me the product. if i get the drive for 99 plus shipping plus tax i'll be happy, if not, well, i'll have another $110 in my pocket to spend on a duron or something. my order was in at 4 am, so maybe they weren't out *crosses fingers*

Just so you guys in NE know.

The Warwick Rhode Island store is out already. I got the last 4 at 10:45 this morning. I got there 30 seconds before a guy who wanted two (a prison gaurd no less. Guess I better not go to jail! :Q).

They managed to find one in the back, but it was on hold for someone, and they told him to talk to the manager. I didn't get the whole story, but it's possible it was about a raincheck.

So it's worth a shot, but I'd call first, because it's nasty out there today.
While filling up my winshield washer fluid, the wind blew almost half the bottle on the ground, and I had the bottle practically inside the holder!!!

Now that's windy. :Q:Q:Q

Good luck, and thanks for the tip guys. 🙂

BTW you should have seen the look on their face when I said I'll take 4. hehe 😀
I also made em ring each one individually. So if I need to return one. They won't make me wait for a check, since I paid cash. 😉

Buffer Issues.

I haver had a Plextor 12x10x32 burnproof drive since last july (as I paid $170 for it, I don't really feel bad about all these deals. 🙂 ). The 2MB buffer is enough. I have never gotten a buffer underrun, and the only problem I have ever had to cause costers is when I had my hard drives automatically spin down. The problem was, that the plextor and/or burning software can't seem to deal with a power on event to a hard disk on the same chain. So, lesson learnt, don't use power managment for your HDs while you burn. Besides that, If I'm buring huge files (say a 700MB movie), then even my machine which has 384MB of RAM becomes slow, but I hardly ever have to make use of the burnproof feature. When I burn mp3 CDs, The machine is zippy, and since it doesn't run of memory, I don't have a problem. This is a win2k/linux machine. (oh, and if you get the latest linux cdr utilities, they support burnproof). So basically 700MB CDs take 7 Minutes total (aka 12x burning), and the longest a CD has ever taken me, when I was doing lots and lots of disk stuff so it wasn't able to keep up, was like 10 minutes, but that has only happened a few times. I have burnt 200+ CDs with this drive.

Went by Best Buy looking for a pricematch and they already had theirs marked to 99$. I wonder if they are selling them on line for that price.

Best Buy Has them already marked down to 129.99 It was marked on the shelf that way when I got there. No pricematch or anything.

This was in the Chicago area. But what from what I understand this is Systemwide. They had anticipated the compusa deal and did want to have to add the 10%, so go check your Local Bestbuy the 1 I went to had about 10 of them left.

Mine is revision 1.04 I'm not real clear on if under win98 if that firmware hack is a forsure go?
Some of the posts were saying it worked fine under win2k but were having problems in 98 when going from lower revisions like 1.03 or 4 .
Has anyone succesfully went from 1.04 to 1.07 under win98 using the hack utiliy that was posted ?

HD

thetoad, thank you for the figures.
I hope these drives here will be as speedy as yours.
I still have W98 and hopefully it will work with that OS like in your system.

I just spoke to the CompUSA order center and the lady told me that they still had tons of these in the Texas warehouse and that if I (or anybody else) ordered it, that there was a great chance of getting it quickly. We'll see...Good luck!

😀
