IO Shield

😕 What is the purpose of an IO shield?
What problems would there be in not using one?
I bought a refurb. Abit NF7 from newegg, and it didn't come with one. Abit wants $11 for one.
I am wondering if I can get by without one.:roll:

You can but dust will get in easier and airflow will not be quite right.

Did your case come with one. Often, the ones that come with the case will be almost the same. And you can probably just cut out any bits if you need.

Otherwise, try looking in a bargain bin at a computer store. You could probably find one that will fit for a couple of dollars, if you know what to look for.

It helps ground the motherboard so you'll definately be safer with one.

The i/o shield helps ground the ports on the back of the motherboard. It doesn't really ground the motherboard itself, but it grounds the ports.

The i/o shield helps ground the ports on the back of the motherboard. It doesn't really ground the motherboard itself, but it grounds the ports.

Will work fine without one. Got an amd xp system that's over a year old that never had one one. If you have fans blowing air in and out your system, dust will get in no matter what 🙂

Yeah, they aen't really necessary. If you have one, you may as well use it. Without one, your airflow may be messed up and dust can easily get into your system (I have my side off so it doesn't matter anyways).

Actually the ports and port shields are already grounded - the shield grounds itself to the ports to make a tighter RFI block. They are sold on eBay, etc. Or you can usually wheedle one out of the mobo maker, but it might take a while - took me a month. I kept offering to buy one, but they kept saying, "No, we'll just send you one..." And they finally did. 😀
