Involved in a "hit and run"

So I accidentally bumped in a car that was parked about 500 ft from my house (more of a clip)...minor damage to my car (scratches and a tiny dent). I think I broke the other cars front light but not much beyond that. Anyway, I ran back to my place to grab and pen and pad to leave the contact info and low and behold the car left by the time I got there.

So I called the PD and left them my contact number but I'm not sure what else to do at this point. I've seen the car before so I'm pretty sure I can track it down (eventually). I plan on periodically driving through the street in the evenings to see if I can find the car.

I just feel bad that the car owner is probably thinking "what a great effin start to my week."

Anyone been in a similar situation? Any additional thoughts/advice?

Wait so you left the scene of the accident?

Of all people you should know better... Not even to go get a pen etc...

"I went to go get a pen and pad".

The cops are totally gonna buy that. Since you came back and the car wasn't there, you should have finished the hit and run by driving back home.

I haven't been in that type of situation, no. But I was once the victim of a hit and run. I was stopped at a traffic light and a drunk driver slammed into me. He was going about 50 MPH in an F150. The back of my car (a mid 90's toyota corolla) crumpled in all the way to about 6" behind the front seats. Thank god for crumple zones. And double thank god that no one else was in my car.

Anyway, the drunk fled the scene in his truck. Thankfully there was a police car making a routine traffic stop about 100 yards up the road. I ran up to the cop, told him what happened, and he put an APB out on the truck that hit me. By the time the alert went out, the truck had been pulled over. Perp was driving 100+ MPH with no headlights (they were destroyed in the impact with my car).

Hope you manage to find the owner of the car you hit and make things right, as it sucks to be on the receiving end of a hit and run.

OP called the cops and left his number, so I think he gains some credibility there.

Ask around the neighborhood? If the car was parked there someone knows the person. You could print up a letter with your contact information explaining the situation and drop it off at each business/home in the area.

Ummm, yeah. I already called and reported it as soon as I got back and realized the car was gone. The cop said thanks for calling it in...hopefully the car owner will call in and we'll give him your info...they didn't seem all that concerned.

They didn't even ask me for my insurance...he just asked if I was insured. I said yes. He said "Well, hopefully you see the car in the evening. Leave your contact and try to resolve it ASAP."

So, you're telling me there are adults who don't have a pen and paper either on them or in the car at all times? I don't think I've ever left the house without a pen in the last 20 years.

what?

I couldn't even tell you the last time I had to hand-write anything but my signature in the checkout line or a birthday card.

That's what I'm telling you. I usually throw in a pen in my coat pocket when I leave the house but sometimes I forget. I work less than 2 miles away from where I live so I've never really ran into a situation where I needed a pen (until today).

Tough way to start a new week.

Though, it sounds like you handled it pretty well. Getting the PD involved was absolutely the right move.

Only thing I might have done differently would have been to slide a business card under the other car's windshield wiper.

Best of luck with it.

I was on a road that comes up to the feter road of a freeway. It had one of those auto right turn lanes that curves around - so that everyone can right turn on the red automatically.

This douche fuck in front of me starts going through the right turn on red, obviously because no cars are coming. Naturally, I pull up a little, turn to the side to catch a glimpse - still clearly no cars coming. I press the gas.... except apparently this fucking retard ops to go halfway into the lane and stop.

I tried to slam my breaks but there was no option - I bumped him in the back, it pushed him out fully into the feter... and the guy just clearly drives off. He starts getting on to the freeway.. I was waiting for him to pull over or something, but he doesn't - so I shrugged it off :whiste:

something very similar happened to a friend of mine two weeks ago but he got bumped, then he pulled up and flipped the guy off at a light, at which time the guy spit in my friend's car.

My friend got out of the car, and the other guy tried to do the same so my friend pushes the door back to prevent him from doing so. Apparently, the guy's foot gets stuck in door. He eventually calms down and and gets out of the car and asks my friend for license and registration, at which time he grabs his wallet and throws it in the bushes.

He calls the local PD when my friend was looking for it. After they show up, they basically say they have the option of a mutual citizens arrest or they can both calm down and go home...after all that, they both went home.

I did that once. I was driving a VW bus, and the guy in front of me did the same thing, and I rear ended him. Didn't do any damage to his truck, but my bumper went under his, and it dented the front of the bus. The dent it left made the front look like a smiley face, so I wasn't too upset about it :^D

When I was 17 I was driving a little too fast on a wet road (40 in a 35) and a kid ran out into the street. I swerved to avoid the child and lost control striking a mailbox. My truck was undamaged by the mailbox was in my truck bed. So I went to the door of the house and no one answered.

Being cell phones were out of the price range of teens in that era, I was forced to drive home and call the police. So I get home, call the cops and low and behold the cops swing in behind my truck in the drive way and treat me like a hit and run.

I tell them I'm on the phone with their dispatch and they tell me, I just left the scene of a accident. Apparently the owners of the house were in a car and saw the accident, decided not to approach me over the the time it took for me to survey the damage and knock on their door and instead just waited for me to leave and then called the cops.

Long and the short is I was treated like a criminal for really having no other option (how do you contact the police without a phone?) and replaced the guys mailbox that night after a trip to menards (and bribing some of my friends to help me dig a hole).

No real point to this story, just felt like sharing.

So you replaced the mailbox and that was it?

Could have knocked on a door or two and got some pen and paper. Well I guess you did run back and only ran 500 feet though to his place. He did leave his car there so it's probably not technically a hit an run.
