Invisible NIC... that works?

Time to bring up the topic that everyone in the networking forum doesn't want to hear about... Cable modem sharing. The story is this: I bought a Linksys switched Ethernet kit knowing that I would want to do internet sharing. I have everything set up, only on 2 systems right now, and it all almost works. I have my Cable modem working, and my server system is also able to share files with my client. The thing is though, when I run WinIPcfg on my server, I only get results for my NIC that is connected to the cable modem. The NIC connected to the switch does not show up at all. As I said, File and Print sharing are working. I have NetBEUI installed, so I am assuming that is how it is sharing, if TCP/IP isn't working. Should I remove NetBEUI? I read everything I could find on Tim Higgins' site, but nothing could help. I have set the IP on both of my server NIC's but only one appears. I used 192.168.0.1 for the server NIC connected to the network, and my assigned IP for my cable modem NIC. On my client system, I used the IP 192.168.0.2 and it shows up just fine in WinIPcfg. Anyone have any idea what is going on?

I'm probably way wrong here, and this may be a dumb question, but did you hit the little down arrow to drop down the list of network adapters under winipcfg? it should be there, and if that's what you did and its not there, then I don't know what to tell you, I haven't used win98 in ages (win2k only since beta3)

I spent a couple days setting up my system and daughters to both share the cable...2 NICs in my computer as the server, and one in hers as the client..and a hub between hers and mine...download Wingate..it was the easiest one to work with..has complete step by step instructions and if followed to the tee it will work great..it has for me all week, so I plan to buy the software after the demo expires. The software must be installed into both computers and it will setup the master computer as the server and the other as client and connect up the internet for you.

Yes I did pull down the menu. Nothing doing. I still have no idea. Luckily what I do have is all weekend to work on this. :) Fun. I might try Wingate, although I did want to stick with ICS. Thanks for the help. I removed NetBEUI from both of my systems, and magically enough File and Printer Sharing doesn't work. Big surprise. Time to figure out what is up with my TCP/IP.

Yes it does. I have an update. I took out my NIC that was supporting my cable modem and rebooted. The system loaded perfectly fine, but then when I tried to run WinIPcfg it told me "Fatal error, the IP address information couldn't be loaded." Something to that effect anyway. I took out the Linksys card that was not working, and put in the NIC that came with my cable modem. I set it up to work on the LAN and ran WinIPcfg. Wow. It runs perfectly and gives me the correct IP. So I assume it is the Linksys NIC that is messed up. I take it out and put it in my other system to test. I boot up, and run WinIPcfg first thing. Works in that system. Any idea what could be causing these issues? IRQ conflict? I think the Linksys didn't work in my main system even when it was alone though. Help please.

The same thing happened to me. Had two perfectly working nics, installed ics...the nic on the local network (the dhcp server) disapears, but still somehow mostly functions. It was in the system/networking tab, but ipconfig /all & winipcfg wouldn't show it.

The problem is that mine isn't working. I can get either the network to work or the modem to work, but never both at the same time. This does cause issues. I have used all 3 different NICs in different configurations and WinIPcfg will never show them both at the same time, and I can only ping one of them. I don't know if this is a driver issue or what, but I definitely need a way around. As I stated, I have used the Asix and Linksys NICs in different configurations and none of them work.

Are you sure you have TCP/IP protocol loaded & setup for the NIC in question? Go to network neighborhood, right click properties and tell us what you have.

Yes I do have TCP/IP installed. This is not really a human error situation if I am correct, considering I tried installing the NICs in 2 seperate PCs and I have done it multiple times on each. I could not be making the same mistake that much, unless there is something very subtle that I don't know I should/should not be doing. I believe it might be a driver problem, does anyone know how Linksys cards do with having another NIC in the same system?
