Invisible Modem?

A friend of mine installed the WindowsXP Home Upgrade the other day (without my knowledge) and is now having problems finding his modem. The modem can be found in the Device Manager but when he tries to setup an internet connection he cannot find the modem. Instead of finding his modem, which is a 3COM/USR Internal Modem, the Dial-up Connection finds an "Unaccessible Modem" which obviously cannot be used.

I spent about an hour trying to find out how to change the modem from Unaccessible Modem to the USR modem but it's impossible.

Would upgrading the drivers solve the issue?

Would upgrading from win98 instead of doing a clean install be the culprit?

Well I have WinXP on my laptop and it found my modem (internal one) without any problem. I did a clean install. Now what you might want to do is remove the modem from the device list, shut off the computer, pull the modem out, turn computer on, shut it of again and then install modem. If this fails it might be something with his XP installation, so try installing clean.

Hmm...don't know why I never thought of that. Probably a little slow with only 2 hours of sleep :frown:

I'll give that a try. Anyway, like I said, I can see the modem in the Device Manager....just not in the Dialup Connection. So it's only half invisible.

My friend only got the Home Upgrade and not the full version.

After looking at various modem web sites, most say that no matter how
you install XP (clean or upgrade) it's best to install it without a modem
installed. Install the modem after XP is setup...........Greg
