If you're maxxing 401k and Roth that's great.
Outside of that, if you want to play around with a few thousand bucks in a brokerage account like Ameritrade, that's fine, but you should have 10,000 to 20,000 (or more) in cash or a cash equivalent, a high yield savings account, CD's with 12 month or less maturity, etc...
Nothing feels as good as having 20 grand stashed away making 50 bucks a month in interest, perfectly safe, and there in case you need it.
