ok well I ordered covad dsl and it uses pppoe...my comptuer is connected directly into the modem and there's no router involved or any firewall installed...the data line was installed today but every time I try to connect it gives me this invalid username/password on specified domain error...and yes I've typed my user name and password hundreds of times and they are correct...I called tech support and they were no help really...all that they basically did was do some simple checking and told me that they couldn't do much until after midnight for some odd reason...however in the meantime...is there anything I should go over and check?

what are you typing this user/password into? the software that came with your dsl ? or are you trying to log your pc into their domain?

You probably do have a router - a Zyxel, right? That's the standard eq for Covad DSL AFAIK. My experience with Covad, which is otherwise excellent, is that their documentation is an ugly hack that doesn't do a good job distinguishing between the various plans they use, which have apparently changed a lot lately. What kind of username are you entering? It could be something like pointless@covad.net, pointless@bz1, or pointless@bz8 depending on your plan. Double-check every single piece of correspondence to see if they specified one over the other - in my case, I needed a different username (and password) than the one I signed up with. The correct username/password was printed in precisely one of the approximately 15 mails/emails I received, compared to the wrong combo which was just about everywhere. And, similarly, the tech support was clueless.
