Invalid IP address

I am trying to set up my first network. I have a D-Link cable modem connected to a D-Link 524 wireless router. My desktop is connected to the router and I just got a Dell 600M.

I upgraded the firmware of the router, assigned a SSID, changed the channel, set the wireless protection to WPA-2, and set a passphrase. I then setup the same workgroup on both the desktop and the laptop through the Network Wizard.

The desktop connects to the internet with no issues. The laptop wireless card (Intel Pro abg) sees the wireless connection and says that it is connected, but then Windows XP says that it has an invalid IP address. Because of that, I cannot get on the internet. Any clues?

What IP settings are you using on the laptop? Right click on the wireless Network connection and choose Properties. You should see TCP/IP Protocol there, go into the configuration and see whether 'Obtain Address automatically' is selected

The code phrase is One Step at the Time.
You start with default setting, and No security. When it works, you change one testing at the time. Doing so you would know if or when something is going wrong.

My IP Address setting is set ot automatic.

I went back and tried everything step by step, one at a time. I have success with the connection until I try to install WPA2 encryption.

I first choose WPA2/PSK option and assign a 12 digit passphrase. I applied this setting to the router, then I removed the previous connection from the list on the laptop. I then looked for available connections and choose to connect to the one I want. The laptop asked for the Network key. I typed my 12 digit passphrase and got an error saying that "the password needs to be 40bits or 104bits depending on your network configuration. This can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters."

So I tried resetting the password to a 26 hexadecimal (0-9, a-f, or A-F) passphrase. This time I did not get the error, but wasnot able to connect. I then tried a 13 ascii (any?) passphrase, again no error, but no connection.

Any ideas?

Sounds like WEP...

Why would the laptop see it as WEP if it is actually set to WPA2 in the router?

Now I reset the security option to WPA2-Auto with PKS. Same 13 character ascii passphrase. The laptop actually connects to the network, but there is a "limited or no connectivity" message. The reason given is there is "the network did not assign a network address to the computer."

Now what?

1. Check and see if the laptop got a valid IP address at command prompt type ipconfig /all

2. If it is getting a valid IP address see if you can get online notwithstanding the "limited ... " message.

3. If you cant, see if you can login to the router and if you can see if it recognizes the laptop and shows it as being connected.

If not reset the router and do the whole setup all over again while holding the router manual in your left hand.

may sound silly, but does your wireless card in your computer/laptop support WPA2?
