Intial start problems - DOA Processor?

I just finished putting together my system. I turned it on, the fans/lights are going, everything has power to it but it doesn't appear to be gigging the harddrive, no repsonse on the monitor, nothing. I took off heatsink and the chip appears to be in perfect condition, it sits firmly in the socket, nothing wrong with heatsink installation. This leads me to believe that the processor is DOA but I have no idea how to confirm or test for this. If anyone has any ideas or thoughts on how to test the processor or something I could have forgotten or if something else may be the problem, please respond. Thanks.

Take out the hard drive and see if it still powers up. Make sure the video card has been plugged in with the extra power cable. Then see if BIOS comes on the screen.

Still nothing. Do you know how I can test my processor to see if it is DOA or whatever? Could it possibly be the memory? Here is my system specs if it would help:

AMD Athlon 64 2800+ NC
ATi Radeon 9600 XT
Crucial 512 MB DDR3200
MSI K8T Neo-FSR

Everything seems to be getting power because all of the fans and lights for the MB, vid card, etc.. are coming on and working, it just seems like the MB is thinking at all. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

if you have a friend with a similar system, try popping the items you think are dying or dead in his or her system to test them.

Isn't there usually some sort of diagnostic hardware that comes with MSI mobos?

It should be something with 4 LEDs on the backplate. It outputs certain color combinations depending on what is not working...if everything is functional, all the LEDs are the same color. Good luck with everything.

hi, me and my sons all have neo mobos, 3200. on my last build we used a similar board, it came with to cpu1 and cpu2 fan plugs. one did not operate the system, fans ran, but nothing else. after review manual and board i tryed cpu2 system booted. but only blue screen, since i was mad i forgot to set bios vid setting up. was set to cpi instead of agp hope this sheds some lite. peace.

Try clearing the CMOS. I had this same problem with an Athlon mobile 3000 in a socket A Asus board. I had to pull the battery and then enter the Bios on the first bootup to relax the latency timings, otherwise it would not post again. Just an idea. 😕

There was another poster a bit ago who had similar trouble. He said he had put the A64 in backwards. I have no idea if that is even possible, though.

I don't think the chip would go in backwards. It should be a ZIF socket and processor (zero insertion force), and should drop in like butter. If you tried putting it in backwards, you would definitely HAVE to force it, probably breaking some pins in the process. 😕

It is very very unlikely that the cpu is the problem. Doublecheck everything else first before worrying about the cpu. Reseat the ram and cards, unplug the drives, recheck the connections to the front of the case, check all cable connections.
