so this company wants to conduct an interview for a summer internship position that I applied to over an Instant Messenger. It is sort of a unique start-up company related to technology

what can I expect?

It is the first round.

PROOF the end of the world is near.

Make sure you're not using AIM Express, I always seem to have my messages post twice when I use it in FireFox :p

Tell them you refuse to use any AOL product, and that you would prefer to use Skype.

They also had the option to choose Skype and MSN. I just went with AIM
This will be my first time logging into my account in a while
I'll be interviewing from my current workplace in my little cubicle

well, it's just the first round. They want to evaluate my written communication skills.. I'm assuming that's the whole point of this 1st round interview

:D That reminds me of one time at work, I went to someone's desk to do some support on their computer and he had his Yahoo messenger window up. His name was 9INCHESANDTHICK. LOL. I fixed his issue and got the hell out of there and washed my hands.

My take is the hiring is hiding his total lack of social skills behind being tech-forward unless you work will be done remotely.
