Interview

So my internship is almost up and I have an interview tomorrow with the company to possibly stay on as a full time employee. I really hate interviews and missed the mock interviews that they had because I was on my vacation. Its going to be 4 people interviewing me at once. One is my present manager, and another is a manager in my office but who is higher up. The third is a guy from corp, and the last is a guy from another department since I have the possibility of switch departments (currently in finance/accounting). I think I really stink at interviews and I've never been in a interview where 4 people are interviewing me at once. My coworker has told me that they like to use the STAR system so I am going to read over those questions but I never know how to respond. I can never think of stories to tell that give good examples of how I overcame a problem, solved a huge problem, made a split second decision, and so on...

anyone have any pointers?

Relax, you'll be fine. Just think of them as your everyday coworkers, they're not exactly new to you and they're not gonna eat you alive. How you are and what you can do is already known and graded, all they really want to see is how you'll interact.

4 people interviewing you at the same time can be a bit nerve wracking, but just try to keep calm and seeing as you already know and work with them, you should be fine...

right, you shouldn't have to worry too much if you have been a good worker so far. As far as internship->full time goes they normally go easy on you (some companies I know of have not even made their interns interview before offering them a full-time spot). So just relax, you will do fine.

Just think, you've been working there for X amt of time and they still want you to interview. Relax, eye contact, etc. And if you do "study" up on the questions, try not to let it sound like a prepared response.

The point of the interview is not for you to tell them stories. When they ask you something, for example how you overcome a problem, you need to know what you want to tell the interviews about yourself through the story, and then tell the story. Let say if you want to convey you are resourceful guy, you can tell them you solve xyz problem by Googling, researching...blah blah blah. Or you wanna tell them you are a hard working guy, you can say you work 24 hrs few days straight...blah blah blah.

Just think about what are some of your best qualities you wanna talk about, and I am sure you can come up with something to back it up, you can even make up stories, as long as you know what you are talking about 😛. The worst thing you can do is go on and on about your story without having a point. Just relax and stick to the stuff you wanna convey, and always have a point to the stuff you wanna say and you will do fine.

Thats the thing..I am not 100% sure where I stand at the moment. When I get work to do I work I get it done and they don't have complaints but a lot of the time I have nothing to do and just surf the web. I make it a point to go and ask the bosses if they have stuff for me to do but I think because I am leaving so soon they didn't want to get me too involved cause it would take a lot of time for them and they are very busy people. My boss always says great things about me but he is such a nice guy I've never heard him say bad things about anymore.

Anyway..we shall see.

So my interview is in 4 hours. Anyone want to share the kinds of answers they have for questions like

Give me an example of a time when you had to be quick in coming to a decision.

Give me an example of a time when you went above and beyond the call of duty.

Describe a situation in which you were able to use persuasion to successfully convince someone to see things your way.

Give me a specific example of a time when you used good judgment and logic in solving a problem.

Tell me about a time when you had to use your presentation skills to influence someone's opinion. (I think right now would be a funny answer but I don't know how comedy plays out in these kinds of interviews)

Give me an example of when you showed initiative and took the lead.

I have some ideas but I was just wondering what kind fo answers people gave. Mine just seem lame cause I don't have a lot of work experience and am just graduating college.

Atleast you got an interview to go back.

First coop....they pretty much cut contact off after I left.

Second Coop...they liked me, wanted to hire me, but they moved to texas and then they told me to screw off after a change in management.

Third coop...WTF? They said I was good for a fulltime position and that several dept were intrested in me. They have not called me back! I have been waiting for 3 months and I was dumb enough to deny another good opportunity because I loved working for them.

Sorry, this is porbably a useless post.....

Just give positive answers.

The only interview I had with multiple people at once... well, I had no idea (other than the standard interview questions) what they'd ask. It went fine. Just gotta learn to relax... take a chill pill 😎.

Relax, you basically need to just BS your answers. And unless they specify work related answers you can throw out a college experience now and then. Talk about the time you went above and beyond and did 90% of the group project because your classmates weren't helping or got sick and you did what needed to be done. Just figure out what the basic answer is that they are looking for, and throw some personal details into it.

I've used to take a shot of liquor or drink a beer before phone interviews. That really helped. I dont really get nervous anymore during interviews, so it's no longer necessary.

Haha I didn't mean that you should take drugs... just relax 😎. A lot of the time, people look at these interviews as the end-all event... like life will stop if this doesn't go well. You're looking at the here-and-now, even if this doesn't go well (which sometimes is purely out of your control... you might just not be suited for a job that you applied for), there will be more chances.
