Interview with nVidia's CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang

Excellent interview. I do believe that the future of computing will be shaped by the GPU just as much as x86 shaped CPU's since the beginning.

That segment where he asked him about the tension between them and Intel - you could tell he was being careful with his words. Overall, I liked the way he explained that. Hearing him say reasons as to why that is made me flashback to the acquisition of ATi by AMD and view it in a different light. I mean, I remember AMD/ATi saying basically the same thing - that GPU/CPU hybrids were the wave of the future and all - but hearing Jen-Hsun put things the way he did really made it sink in better.

It was kind of funny when he started talking about the Ion, considering Anandtech recently did a review of it and thought it was kind of "Meh." But I can see where they're wanting to go with making something like that. Same thing with the 3D Vision.

CUDA sounds cool. Before I thought it was just physics before they refined it to PhysX. Now I better understand what it is due to his x86 for the CPU analogy.

"the 'tension' between intel and us .. is for the battle of the soul of the PC"

They did?

It?d be silly to dislike Ion. Compared to the Atom/945G combo Ion is faster, you can play 3D games on it and you can actually watch Blu-ray movies on it. If the price is right, I?d rather have an Atom CPU paired with the GeForce 9400M than Intel?s 945G. It just makes sense.

It's kind of biased, Intel is not allowed to make GPU's because they'll lose their relevance....where as these guys can embed CPU's in their GPU's as they like & sell it as hybrid.

Aye. They did. The next paragraph down.

It can?t, however, make Atom something it?s not. It?s faster to use Photoshop on Ion than on any of the current Atom platforms, but I still don?t want to. It?s better to play games on the Ion than on a regular Atom system, but it?s not fun to.

"Meh"...now. But I respect where they're going with the idea.

Heh, well it is the CEO...

That was a complaint about Atom in general and not specific to the Ion platform. They had nothing but praise specific to Ion.

Saying that he, "Still didn't want to...[use it]" was specific to the Ion.

You're welcome.

Uh no. You seem to be ignoring the first part of the paragraph for some reason...

It can?t, however, make Atom something it?s not.

Also you keep ignoring
It?d be silly to dislike Ion.

I never said he claimed to dislike Ion. It's quite the opposite in fact.

Don?t get me wrong, I like Ion; I?d like to have it over a standard 945G platform.

I stated that he wasn't thrilled about the thing; he made such a comment immediately after he said he liked it.

I?m just not sure what I?d do with it. Sure it'd be faster than current Atom platforms. But the applications in which it's most noticeable, I'm not sure I'd actually use a netbook for.

Yes, he acknowledged that the Atom was holding the Ion idea back.

As such, the Ion itself has limitations that made him say that he still wouldn't use it for Photoshop or gaming.

Perhaps I shouldn't have paraphrased that with, "Meh", but rather, "Cool...but..."

What do you mean, "Uh no." ???

Who is ignoring what now? Anand said he liked it. But would not want to use it. Maybe it is that he liked the "idea" of Ion more than the piece of technology that currently exists. I mean lets face it, the NV GPU on the Ion is only 16 sp's. You can't do much of squat with 16sp's in the realm of gaming or crunching via CUDA. It could probably play the hell out of videos though, but not much more than that. This could be the "meh" feeling we were getting from the article. Looking at Ion however, shows a bit of what "could" be in the very near future.

Cloud computing. hehe, we will all have terminal clients based on a relative of Ion connected to an unimaginably powerful 20million GPU mainframe called Big Brother. LOL.

i liked the idea of the ion, but not nvidia's implementation. Why would i want such a strong gpu with an atom? if it were up to me i'd only make the gpu slightly faster while putting most of the effort into making it as power efficient as possible. Between an ion and a 55nm 945g i'd pick the 945g, i want battery life not the ability to play hd content from netbooks

I think you missed the point here, as one of Ion's main features is its ability to decode HD content. An Atom by itself isn't powerful enough (entry-level Core 2 is about what you need), and the 945g certainly isn't either.

Keep in mind, HD decode was kind of a big deal about 2 years ago until Intel released Core 2 and Nvidia started putting decode hardware on their GPUs starting with the G80.

HD Decoding in 2006

As for Jensen's comments, they're always interesting and certainly provide a glimpse into the mind of a genius. Love him or hate him, he's truly a visionary that keeps Nvidia moving forward.

i understand their point, having something so small be able to decode hd content is great, for a netop, however people most who buy netbooks buy them for mobility and i'm sure they'd sacrifice hd playback for +1 hour of battery life

I read the Ion review and got the impression that they were rather 'meh' on it as well.

This is where I would like PC's to go. Super small. I am very tired of huge towers with huge loud cooling fans. I want a video card upgrade the size of a matchbook. RAM upgrades the size of Chicklets. I want optical storage media to go bye bye. If I want to watch a movie, I want to plug in a simple USB key style device the size of a penny. Wont see any of this for years and years. As it is, I'm SUPER happy the hard drive industry is moving away from conventional hard drives to SSD drives. no more moving parts. Faster. All good.

Small is the way to go. Ion looks like the beginning of this trend. But then again, it doesn't have to be Ion, it could be any company who brings smallness (with power) to the desktop PC.

/sorry for rantage. 🙂

I share your vision and the desire for it to come to pass. If NV gets us there then I'll happily pre-order from their website.

I want a computer that is the size of bluetooth ear device (or smaller, but I can live with it being that big) which reads inputs directly from my brainwaves as well as being capable of sending the output directly back to the old organic slushbag too. (no LCD eyepatch please)

Only challenge I see with that is my internet tab will be flipping from Anandtech to some porn site every 7 seconds, but some say the data to support that notion is somewhat lacking.

side note: anyone else think it funny as hell that in the brainwaves link, the caption reads: "An elderly Chinese woman..." when it is clearly a mid-life Caucasian man?

seems that charlie rose purged his website of old videos and now you can only watch some of the older ones on amazon or hulu

was surprised to see this site come up

would have been interesting what jen hsun huang or paul otellini had to say

so what has gone on with what they were talking about and what has changed?
