Interview tomorrow, will mmntech get this job?!

mmntech

So here's the story. I made a lot of mistakes in my education. Mainly getting into a career field that has a severe job shortage. Studied journalism/broadcast, graduated in 2010. Couldn't find any work. Too many applicants and I just didn't have enough experience. Haven't even landed many interviews. Until this week...

As some of you know, I currently work as a driver for a tight arsed car rental company. They don't give a shit about their employees. Poor working conditions, low pay, and very long days. Even my boss is talking about quitting. I'm miserable there. I've been working hard volunteering at a local cable station trying to get my experience up. Looks like it could pay off soon.

So tomorrow I have an interview for a job I really want. It's for a major cable television station. I would monitor feeds, scanners, traffic cameras and update information for the hosts to use on air, as well as build information databases and liaise with local police/transit/and government. Basically, I'd be a traffic editor. I did this as an intern for a major radio station, so no sweat. It's a full time job and the company is one of Canada's top 100 employers. 8 hour day with potential overtime, possibly weekend work. Anything that gets me out of working 11hr days day in day out is perfect. Plus it's only a 30 minute drive away, in the suburbs, so no commuting into Toronto. They've also hired a lot of alumni from my college, which is literally 10 minutes away.

This would be a huge leap for me career wise. I'm really excited. The thing is, I'm not a people person and it's been a long time since I've done a serious interview. I'm pretty nervous about it. Do you guys have any tips to help me out?

Try to be yourself (don't pretend to be someone your not, just be truthful honest and energetic), drink water before you go in. Remember to sit up straight and just breathe in and out to relax and calm your adrenaline down. Once you open your mouth to answer your questions remember to try and smile and try and get a good read on the interviewer.

Goodluck!

We can only hope not...who the fuck is going to get us our rental cars if you leave?

😛

Good luck with the interview...but just remember, be careful what you ask for...you just might get it.

I went for the interview today. HR lady seemed nice and genuinely interested in my application. I felt I could have done better but it wasn't too bad. The ops manager sat in, but he seemed a bit disinterested and not very friendly. Not too enthusiastic. It`s one of those companies that likes to do multiple interviews. Don`t know why they all do that now. Guess they can't decide and need more time to weed people out. They said if I was selected for interview #2, I'd be called shortly. Honestly, I don't know if they'll call. I don't want to set myself up for disappointment. We'll see how it goes.

I went to an interview a few years ago and the two who were interviewing me were completely dis-interested. I practically walked out of the interview.

I hope you get the job.
And I hope you changed your siut.

My wife has a communications degree. Worked for years at local radio stations and tv stations running cameras and tearing scripts...for minimum fucking wage. Just too many applicants and not enough positions, so they can get away paying nothing.

She now works in hospital administration. I also make 2.5 times as much as her with a night school diploma.

Her degree was a waste. She really enjoyed her job though.

They called me fora second interview today. That's very promising. I honestly didn't think they would. Any body know what these entail? She said its shorter than the first one.

She mentioned possible hours too. It's 1-9pm. Pretty sweet shift. Sleep in, no traffic.

I'm glad you remembered to use me as a reference. I was very positive when they called. Don't be surprised if you're asked to give an example of your "under the table performance" though.
The guy I spoke with seemed very interested.

If that is M-F, that is a good shift.

congrats on landing the second interview. in most cases this is the final one and if they tell you upfront that it's a shorter one, it's likely that you will be meeting with senior management.

for me, it was a panel interview between two senior executives. it was a short, 30 minute interview where they just wanted to get to know me.

for you, OP, I would guess that this is their opportunity to get to know you and determine whether or not you are a good fit for their company and culture.

just always remember to be yourself and not let nervousness take over.

oh, and wait for them to discuss salary; never throw that out first.

The HR lady did say a couple higher ups will be joining in this time around, plus her and the ops manager from last time. It's for a whole new department actually.

What sorts of questions did they ask you? I've never been involved in multiple interviews before so it's uncharted territory.

I haven't mentioned pay. They asked but I declined to answer. I'd expect ball park around $20/hr, give or take. The local cable station I volunteer at pays their lowest ranking staff $17/hr. Regardless, it would be significantly more than what I make now.

Good luck bud! I've done the shit job for low pay for a long time and it sucks. It does feel great when you get that break to start your career though.
