Interview Question

Diamond Member
A. Rainmaker (does nothing but brings in money/clients to the organization)

OR

B. THE 'go-to' guy who can answer any question asked by other associates/partners.

I tried to be vague but I essentially chose A. We'll see if I get a call-back for a 2nd interview.

This was for a specialty law firm. I was talking to the partner/founder and after 3 straight hours of questioning I wasn't in the 'team player' mood.

I would think a partner would want/need people that bring in business more so than be an encyclopedia of info that can be looked up anyway.

B... because that's the guy who's more likely to be me, and it's in my best interest to choose myself for the job.

I think the point of the question is that they want you to recognize that one is useless without the other, and they want to see your thought process in coming up with an answer. In other words, it was a stupid question. 🙂

That what I kinda thought and tried to play a position towards the middle but he wanted an answer.
He then asked '5 years from now which would you like to be?' I answered that I was even closer to A.

I am not sure about the whole team player approach because the partners all believed in throwing new associates 'into the deep end' to help them learn to swim instead of taking the 'kick-board in the shallow end' method.
