My brother received a email notification for a job interview. No phone call just email. Is this the norm now? Really strange.

Assuming he applied for the job, yeah, this is pretty standard. Aside from phone interviews, most places won't/don't like calls.

If they asked for a credit card number to hold the interview, tell him to provide it right away.

Its a university and not a mass mailing because the times that were offered were limited. he responded 8 hours later and got the time he requested.

Pretty much every interview I've ever had was: (1) email that leads to (2) phone interview that leads to (3) on-site interview.

I mean for real jobs and not Disney or the grocery store.

I've interviewed with about 20 engineering companies over the last 4 years. About 75% of the companies just sent emails regarding the interview. A few of the larger ones (Microsoft, etc) with extensive HR units called me.

I had an interview notice via email also.

It was fast. He replied right away, then scheduled me next day. They weren't big either, a boutique shop. They only reviewed about 5 people.

I didn't get it. =\ It was for project management in NYC.

I wish more places did this. The job I have now called, left a vm, and immediately emailed me with an appointment invitation on the email for the interview

A job i applied for called, which is ok...but its an IT position, so I actually half-expected to just get an email *shrug*

Its not as formal as a phone call, so I understand I suppose.

I implement applicant tracking systems as my primary occupation at this point.

1. Some companies configure their candidate status workflow to trigger a "heads up" email when they plan to follow up with a phone call to schedule an interview.
2. Some systems permit an interview slots functionality. They input their availability, mass email the applicable candidates, and candidates can view and claim open slots. As a slot is claimed, it will not be offered to the next candidate to view the open slots. It's most often used for high volume hiring like retail.

There are a few other options but those are the most common. Do either of those fit the situation?
