At one of my interviews while in school, the company visited campus and met with a group of us at a restaurant for dinner with one representative sitting at each table. The company representative at my table was the only person at the table without a silverware setting. While he was being bugged by other nerds about things like linux, I got up and walked over to an empty table, grabbed an unused silverware and napkin setting, returned with it, gave it to him, and did not say a word the rest of the dinner (because he was capitalized by the others so much).
I do not know if my action helped but they did ask me to their office location for a second interview.
During another interview, they showed me a baby's plastic toy. A small steering wheel with buttons, lights, and sounds to simulate driving a car. They then asked me to create an object oriented class structure to operate that steering wheel, in whatever language I wanted to show it in.
Another interview asked about operating systems signals, semaphores, and race conditions.
Another interview asked about the advantages a database management system has over flat files.
