I was just informed by someone at my university that our ITS department was going to make the switch over to Internet2. I was curious what it is and what it means to my future on the internet while I am at school.

Confirm/Deny these please:

-Faster
-More security
-More Ports Blocked
-Disallows port forwarding/using proxies (I currently use proxifier to access IRC and other programs)
-Gaming denied

Thanks for your input :)

The regular Internet (before the Viagra peddlers hijacked it ;) ) started with the US government financing an experimental Network between Educational institutions.

Currently there is a similar project, experimenting with a much faster Internet, and similarly it is available in participating Educational institutions.

If your institution is part of the project, they probably sign On people who are involved with the development of this project, or and people that their research projects can benefit from faster connection.

:sun:

P.S. Faster Download of pirated music and pr0n is usually not a good excuse to join. ;) j/k

Internet 2 is just a different set of protocols, it is still connected to the rest of the internet.

Its probably a pthway to getting more broadband oriented networks with 10 and 100 mbit connections being the norm instead of 1-6mbit.

not really. At it's heart it is a research bed to develop the product/technologies that will enable more enhanced communications.

remember - a network is nothing more than wires and gear to use those wires. that gear in turn enables features.
