Hi. A network I administer has 3 pc's and a server. Anyways, the internet on one of the PC's has just stopped working.

I can still access the server and any other of the computers.
I can even ping any ip address such as google and all that but when i go into internet explorer, it says connecting with the ip address, and then just goes to page cannot be displayed. I tryed using firefox and i just get a blank screen.

Any idea why?

My VPN connection won't work either, but yeh can still ping other sites and tracert works fine and can even access the router through the browser.

Pretty sure theres no viruses.

Thanks guys

When you say you can ping by ip you mean you are going ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx right? Or are you doing a ping google.com?

If its working by IP and not by name its likely that you have a dns problem, either an incorrect or non-existant one. Please clarify a little more and we can work from there

Check your DNS settings. IF you can ping by address, but not by name, it is almost certainly a DNS issue.

Good Luck

Scott

Thanks for the replies guys.

I dont believe its a DNS issue however as I can ping by both name and ip address (e.g. google), but i cant access these sites in internet explorer or firefox by name or ip address.

e.g. typing the ip address into the address bar won't work.....

any more ideas?

I had the same problem with a gateway (brand) computer. I could ping everything and it was happy, but i could never open a page under firefox or IE, never figured it out, but i just reformated the computer. If you find a fix let us know, that one still bothers me.

Check browser proxy settings, and, from a cmd prompt, that of "proxycfg". Clear them (if applicable) with "proxycfg -d". Any dodgy browser helper objects loaded? PeerGuardian blocking HTTP ?

no proxy is used its just a strait connection and thats how the settings appear as well... exact settings as the other computers. nothing has been installed on it from when it stopped working... no dodgy browser objects and im pretty sure theres nothing blocking http as i can access my routers setup (192.168.1.1)....

Any time I encountered this problem, it has ALWAYS been a firewall issue. If you can ping a domain but internet explorer or firefox won't let it out, check, check, then re-check again for a software firewall.

Hi there. Forgot to let you know that it was a firewall!

But now a few weeks later the problems have got worse.

Firewall definately is disabled!

Now the internet will work for about 5-10 minutes when the computer is turned on, but then after that the internet will stop working.

Pinging the addres or even ip just doesnt work.

Any ideas why?
