Not smart at all.

Dreaming big; IBM looks to host entire internet on a single modified Blue Gene supercomputer

Thomas Watson, founder of IBM, is oft misquoted as stating that the world really only would need five computers. Ironically the frequently used, erroneous quotation may come to true by the very hands of the business Watson created.

IBM launched an Epic project with an almost unfathomable goal -- to develop a single supercomputer capable of running the entire internet as a web application. The project, codenamed Kittyhawk (detailed in a white paper by IBM) created quite the stir in internet technology community.

The problem isn't performance, it's storage. Notice there's no mention of hard drive space ;)

Also, what if terrorists decide to fly an airplane into the supercomputer? /fail

I think it's a cool idea, but I also think it's an expensive one.

And uh, it'd be a lot easier for a hacker to "break" the internet...

You gotta have a second one for a backup... duh!

Besides, they probably keep something like this in an earthquake and flood proof bunker somewhere!

This doesn't really help anything. The information still needs to get from there to here. Communication is the bottleneck, not the server.

Besides, why would anyone want to take a redundant, highly decentralized, fault tolerant system and replace it with a single server (unless one was selling said server)?

They don't really seem to propose that at all, of course IBM knows it would be an idiotic "proposal." They're just saying it's a good webhosting solution.

At least Hollywood now has a viable explanation for all of those non-redundant "cores" that can always be "overloaded" and blow shit up in every Sci-fi series known to man...

Some morons thought of it along the way...

It shall have a second computer hooked up to laser cannons on magnetic servos, able to quickly quickly target aerial threats and destroy them.

These racks could be effective for specialized solutions that don't require too much storage but lots of bandwidth, processing capacity and expandability like search engines for example.

Internet. Internet. The internet is not the computers, it's the connection between them. Even if one computer hosted all the websites (dumb and unlikely), it wouldn't be the "internet" until tons of other computers were connected to it and to each other.
