internet through satellite ?

is this pretty fast? or a good way for an internet provider? I have only heard about this, i was wondering if its true you can get a little pc satellite and get internet through it... anyone know of some sites where i could read some info on it?

man i sound like a moron.... but i dont know anything about this satellite thing 😀

its kinda crappy. Yes, you do get some great _download_ speeds. But in order for you to upload anything, you have to be connected with a normal old 56K modem. So it ends up costing quite alot I would assume.

And that configuration would suck for gaming. Having two completley seperate pings for send and recieve would cause all kinds of strange bad things to happen in a game 🙂

Oh definatly go with cable! It will be faster than satellite would be and probably alot cheaper.

There will be penalties for taking too much bandwidth too, really sucks. Not to mention you have to pay the extra ISP fee just for the modem upload.

Actually two way satellites are going to be available next month. They offer twice the upload speed compared to a 56K modem and 10 times the download speed. The only major drawback is the latency. It can be anywhere from 500ms to 750ms, but thats what you get for transmitting data 24,000 miles into space.

DirecTV is supposed to release the two way satellite, called DirecPC, next month. The price per month I have heard will be around 25 to 60 per month for subscriptions depending on the hourly limit per month. They are in with AOL, that is their main supplier of service. They are supposed to make it so you can get service from other providers, but nothing is firm on that yet.

Gilat-to-Homewill also have their "Starbrand" service in the 4th quarter. I think it will be available through msn and/or dish. Prices are still undetermined, but "will be priced to compete aggressively in the consumer broadband marketplace."

Radio Shack was carrying someone, too.

Lets hope one of these services come through.

I worked for a Radio Shack for three years before I went off to college. Right before i left Gilat installed a two way satelite at the store i worked at to demo the service. Initially Microsoft will be the ISP but I am not sure what will happen later. Dish Network is also supposed to have hardware compatible with the service. The dish will also receive Sat TV too. Most recently i heard that 1.3mb service will run around 60 dollars per month. Not too bad.

You can get Starband from radio trash now but you have to buy a preconfigured pc for $1200 to get you started. I guess they think we're to stupid to set it up on our own. The pc is a Compaq. There won't be any Compaq's in my house.
I have not gotten any quotes on speed from anyone that might know what they're talking about. I do know they want $60 a month.
DirecPc is at $40 a month if you have your own isp. $50 a month if they provide one. The hours are unlimited. They will have two way by the end of this quarter or early next quarter.

BTW, Starband and Gilat are the same thing.

I think we'll get something soon here in Toronto from Look (have no idea what this company is, may be a hoax for all I know), they started advertizing 3Mbps dish connections with 640kbps upload. It's pretty cheap too, and they say there's no installation fee.

Anybody knows more about this?

My friend is a computer consultant and a big computer company wants to hire him so they are giving him "brother in law discounts." One thing he could get is cheap bidirectional satellite from them (the satellite was launched 2 months ago). Its around 500Kbps down and 120 up. Not bad, but he is going to get the DSL from them which is 768Kbps down 256kbps up.

Yes, I would rather have DSL or Cable but they are not available in my area and will not be in the next year or two, so satellite is my only choice. I've had it up and running since Sun. I down load from Newscene newsgroups just under 2 megs a minute during peak hours. I haven't been awake to check how fast it was during off peak hours. Nothing to brag about but it is a hell of a lot better the downloading with that crappy modem. So if you can't get dsl or cable, satellite is not a bad choice. You might want to wait until they come out with two way sometime during the next few months. If you get it now you will probably have to pay for some new equipment when the two way comes out.
