Well today they were doing some testing of some new security measures that were be put into effect at work.

So after the testing began I sent this email--

I am having trouble connecting to my yahoo messenger.

Also I can?t seem to connect to kazaa

And I keep getting the error ?gator is unable to connect to the internet?

Is this something I should be concerned with? What is gator?

Can you look into this for me.

Basically they are trying to stop people from using streaming media and chat programs.

Actually unlike my last job these IT guys are pretty good.

and the IT responce -

The sites and services you refer to are being blocked by the internet test we are conducting. These services fall outside the corporate allowable activity and will not be allowed in the future. If you have some internet applications that are failing that prevent you from doing your job, please let me know right away.

Well DUH!

IT people dont generally know which of the regular employees are geeks and which ones just really dont know things... that seems like the response I would have sent if I got that email.

I agree. And, with any luck, this won't hit your own chain of command. Sending an email like the OP did can be kind of risky in certain corporate environments.

I don't get your point? Are you saying they are doing something stupid by blocking these services at work?

By sending that e-mail you are basically saying that you are slacking off at work, the exact thing that they are trying to prevent.

Granted your email was humorous, it can be extremely career damaging. What happens if your email happens to move up in the chain of command like Astaroth33 said?

You will most likely get in trouble. Emails with sensitive messages can be very bad. I should know, I sent an innocent email to the sr. network manager at my university asking if specs of a Cisco switch will work with what was in the closet. That email was sent to nearly every high individual on campus, including the dean of the business school, president of the university, CIO of the university and so on...

I learned my lesson....

I talked with the service manager before I sent it.

I sent it to my friend who works in IT who thought is was funny so he forwarded it to the IT manager. He also thought it was funny after he realized it was a joke.

Uh. How is that in any way sensitive? Unless you aren't allowed to extend the campus network (Pffft)

I don't use any of these services at work.

I do browse the forums when I am on the phone "On occasion"

My supervisor has been pretty good about as long as the work gets done .....

I put in about 50 hours a week on the clock and normally 10 at home doing various projects. I do not get paid for my home time.

They are trying to stop people from chatting it up on IM or listening to streaming music. I totally understand this because there are times that I need to download large files and the pipe is clogged up.

They ran a two hour "test run" to insure that the things that we do need the internet for will not be effected by the blocking of whatever they are doing. These guys keep a pretty tight lid on the computers and my department is the only one that has "admin" rights on our boxes. (we install/uninstall alot of software).

I talked to the IT director that sent that email and he appologized to me. He didn't relize it was a joke. The other IT guys razzed him pretty hard after he sent that mail. HE THOUGHT THE MAIL was "hilarious" after he realized it was from me. He was just sending out the stock response.

I try and have a good time at work when I can, Considering that they were all laughing about it I thing I did a pretty good job.

I am not going to get into anyt trouble for this so It's all good:D
