Internet speed at WIFI locations

I am thinking about getting rid of my desktop computer & DSL service provider and purchasing a laptop and just using public WIFI locations to access the Internet.

My question is, are the Internet connectivity speeds at local public WIFI locations fast enough to allow me to download and install operating system updates without having to sit at those locations for an exorbitant amount of time - assuming that the laptop has better than average hardware.

Thanks.

It might be that something like this is in exists but in general it is No solution.

Jack:

I am not sure I understand your answer.

Are you saying that those public WIFI connects would generally be too SLOW to allow for the downloading of OS updates ? And if that is the case, then how could a person with a laptop computer who did not have a high speed connection (i.e. DSL, etc., etc.) ever be able to keep their OS up-to-date ? Or would they be forced to borrow someone elses DSL or CABLE connection to get the updates ?

Thanks.

Well (as an example), a person with his/her own Slow connection can leave the computer to do slow updates (or what ever takes long time) during the day when he/she goes to work, or during the Night while he/she at sleep.

Otherwise, unless family and or good friends allow you to use their connection for this purpose, finding free connection that will let you do long time large downloads is Not easy.

Depending where you are at, may be Free Internet connection in a Public Library would.

This has been my experience as well. The library is the most consistent. If the library is busy that day, it will be consistently and considerably slower.

Is it possible that a free public wifi hotspot will be fast enough and reliable enough to do Windows updates? Yes.

Is it likely? No.

lol, I don't think that's a good solution. Most hotspots do not allow large download and there is a tendency that your download will be interrupted which is not good!

And it is not always the hotspot thats slow, Windows update is set to DL slow (To use as little bandwidth as possible)
