I got Verizon's DSL service just recently, and I set up a computer to be a server. That computer has two NICs, one connects directly to the DSL modem, and the other one connects to the hub. me and my roomies' 2 other computers are then connected to the hub. We didn't use any other software to configure the proxy settings on the server. We have a dynamic IP. Our network was working for a while, but we would loose connection about every 3 days. We will have to restart the server for the connection to come back up. I'm wondering if that could be due to the fact that we have a dynamic IP. Also we can send files via icq and AIM to eachother, but cannot send files to anyone outside of our network. Could that be due to the fact that we didn't configure our proxy settings on the server? just yesterday, our network refuses to work. I connected my computer directly to the dsl modem and it connects, so that means nothing is wrong with our DSL line. Now i have no idea how to fix the server. Maybe i am just setting up our server completely wrong and I need some help on how exactly do u setup this server, and with what software(preferably free). The server was running on 98se, my roomies have either WinME or Win2000. Is there a possiblity of incompatible operating system? I am really new to networking, and i've been setting up things just according to what my friends have been telling me. Obviously its not really working. I want to avoid buying a router because my roomies don't really want to chip in for one and I just really hope this server setup will eventually work.
