ok.. here is my quandry and I will try and be as specific as I Can.

I Am using Roadrunner Cable modem service.. paying for 2 ip addresses (dynamic ones)
I bought 1 linksys autosensing switch 5 port.

2 pcs. One has a netgear network pci 10/100 auto The other has a D-link 10/100 auto pci. Both are runnning Windows Xp Pro.

Initial after some trial and error. I got both pcs online fully. I connected the cable modem to the uplink port on the switch. And connected the other 2 pcs to separate ports on the switch. MY dad and my self could get online.. Download at the same time. and surf and play games everything...

Then about a week ago... he started having problems on his pc. He couldn't dowload anymore.. it would start downloading.... then stop half-way. Now his system had been running an upgrade install of Winxp.. So I Thought maybe it was old issues of Winme..that were the problem cause his system had been so hard for me to get going. I redid his system...complete wipe and installed xp.

SAME problem... download would cut-off half-way. I tried to talk to Roadrunner.. But they REFuse to help saying they don't support home networks ... EVEN THOUGH THEY Sold an extra ip to me. grr.

So I thought it might be that his network cables had gotten screwed up. So I got new ones.. Reconnected..

HE browses flawlessly.. AS do I.. But he can't download anything EVEn email!!
while I download just fine.

Any ideas what the problem could be? And how should I test to determine it? its driving me nuts and my dad is about ready to cancel cable .. I Don't blame him. But I know its got to be something that I can fix.

he can browse, but not download eh? interesting

my first idea is to cycle power to the switch (i.e. unplug it for awhile) and do the same with the cable modem.

next, turn both on, and see if problem is fixed

if not, try shutting both down...resetting cable modem, and booting up just your dad's box...see if he has full access

if so, then turn yours on and see if you have same symptoms as his

either way, report back

Work with one Computer at the time.

Connect the Cable Modem directly to one computer.

If works ok, connect the cable Modem to the WAN of the Router using the same cable that was connected to the Modem before; connect only the one computer that worked by it self to a regular port on the Router.

If it does not works try an other CAT5 cable between the router, and the computer. If it does not work, check all the router's settings. (RR usually uses MAC for authentication, make sure that the MAC is cloned).

If the Router?s settings are correct, and it does not work call the Router manufacture, you may be have bad Router.

If it works correctly to this point, repeat the same with the other computer, until you isolate the problem.

I'd like to know, because I have the same issue. Even removed from the network one of my PC's hangs on downloads, but will receive short bursts like emails, forum pages.

I shut off both cable modem and the switch removed power to both for 5 minutes.

Restarted.
