Internet Romances: What do yall think?

Hi my roommate has an internet romance going with some girl in Washington state. He calls her at midnight practically every night and thus ties up the phone lines. I don't know a lot of stuff about these "flings" so I just wanted to see what the Anandtech crowd has to say about these. I'm not saying it is exactly bad, I just want to do a little research.

How's it diferent from any other long distance relationship? I mean, barring the fact they may not have met face to face yet? I have a friend who met his fiance online. I think it's great. Just like any other kind relationship it can go bad but it has the chance to be good too.

I think they can work, if both people are honest about what they really are, and take it slow and carefully. But people should learn to do that in regular relationships too.
