Internet really slow

I'm not this person, but my problem is very similar to what she asked. My internet is really laggy, but if I reset the router (both by manually unplugging the power cord or electronically rebooting the router through internet explorer) my internet becomes fast again. The internet gets slow again after a period of time (15 minutes to 1 hour).

I've ran adaware and spybot and posted hijackthis logs on other sites, but people can't find anything wrong. I probably don't have malware because my roommate also has a slow connection and it becomes fast when I rest the router. The main culprit is the router.

But I'm clueless as to why my internet becomes fast after resetting the router. I connect through a physical cable and my roommate does through a wireless connection.

Now it could be a broken router, but why would it get fast again when I reset it? It's a Belkin and I called the free 24/7 support but they had no clue.

1) check if someone nearby is mooching off your wireless. Secure it with encryption if possible (probably so). To check, look in your router's menu system for info on what computers are connected to it.

2) if either of you is running *ahem* some sort of app which would generate tons of network traffic, try shutting down those apps and see if the problem is solved.


Did you check for malware, by the way? Got antivirus, at least?

 
1. That was my first suspicion. I don't see any other computers in the DHCP client list.

2. We're not running anything other than normal web pages.



I'm going to try to connect directly to the modem today and see if I'm slow.
 
what speed is your ISP providing you? you're hosting webpages locally? need to know what's autostarting.
try running housecall.

I don't know the exact speed my ISP is providing, but I did a speed test when my internet is fast (right after a router reboot) and when the internet is slow.

Download speeds are the same (~1333 kbps) and the upload speed when the internet is fast is at ~331 kbps, but when the internet is slow, the speed is 31 kbps.


What do you mean by hosting webpages locally?
 
sounds like the router is on the fritz. try updating the firmware if there is an update. Even if there's nothing new it won't hurt to load a fresh copy fo the firmware. Just find the manufacturer's website to download the latest version. Hosting sites locally = running a webserver. Another possible cause of the slow down could be line noise sometimes caused by faulty or old copper wires (telephone or cable). Maybe try updating the firmware, and possibly trying another router. If either of those don't fix it, call you ISP and they can usually do a line test while you are on the phone. They will be able to tell if there is something wrong in the line and probably reset your connection. If that doesn't work then they might send a tech to check things out. I have Cable broadband at home and it works perfectly, but for some reason when i had DSL i had some shoddy wires somewhere along the line and i had the same problem you are having. I switched instead of paying to have them fixed.

Replace that cheap router, problem solved!

Those routers are made on an assembly line that takes the company only like 10minutes to make them.
 
Cable/DSL modems aren't any better, and those are often the culprit.

Always try connecting directly to the Cable/DSL modem and see if the problem changes. That will rule out the Router.

Exactly, you need to plug in your pc directly to the cable modem. If you still get the slowdown then you have a bad cable modem, but if you get no slowdown, go buy a decent linksys router.
