When i connect to earthlink i have been finding out that i connect at like 45,333 or 46,667 but lately it has been connecting at 45,333bps but then later on like in an hour i feel that the internet runs slower and when i look at the connection it jumps down to 31,200bps. Does anyone know why it does that and how i can fix if at all? Thanks a million. Do you know if it has anything to do with simply if someone calls you and it slows down the connection somehow?

It has to do with congestion. The more people on the internet the slower it will be. If you have dial-up quite a few things can effect your speed. More people are using the network at peak times. What you connect at has nothing to do with what your real throughput is.

Trying a different connection number is an excellent idea. Your speeds slow down after time if more and more people are getting onto earthlinks connections in that area. This happens alllll the time with AOL connection(since they're so big.) If all else fails, try a different internet company.

Also, not sure if this still applies, but one of the modem technologies(don't remember which one) drop speeds to a more stable connection overtime. Where as the other technology steps up speeds over time for a better connection. The two types are X2 and 56Kflex. I don't remember which one does which. But I do know that if your speed lowers, it's a good time to reconnect. Dial-up is the most unreliable connection available. It's to bad 85% of the world is forced to use it! hehe
