Internet Problem

I've got 2 pc's connected to the net, 1 is working 100% fine. The other, will usually run the internet at startup, but then after a little bit the net will stop working. I can't figure out if its some sort of virus, or bug or something.

Once the net is down the net connection still shows 100% fine, but when I look at the task manager, 0 net activity is going on when I try and open up a webpage. I'm on a DSL line if that helps.

Thank you for any info

Also, there is this trange file in my Windows Temp folder, the file type is TMP, and its just a bunch of random letters and numbers, but I can't find any way to delete it because the computer keeps telling me that it is in use.

Does that computer have an IP address? If it's running XP, boot into safe mode and try and test if it if it keeps the connection. If the connection dies while in safe mode then I'd suspect it might be a bad router or a bad NIC. Even if it's a spyware/virus infection, it should (the internet connection) stay stable within safe mode.

Oh, I forgot to say that yes, it has an IP address, and yes there is a router.

When I restarted in safe mode no internet was working. Since the router works for the 1 computer, I'm guessing that it must be ok?? What is an NIC?

Also, any ideas on spyware/virus or this file in the WINDOWS/TEMP folder?

Thanks!

Cool, thanks, yeah it is a TMP file that gets created every time that I log in to my PC and it just sits in the Windows Temp folder.

Anyone know how I can track down what program is creating/using it?

Thanks!
