yeah it has the same 169 address. how do i delete it? uninstall for the tcp/ip protocol was greyed out under properties. yeah the firewall is off. and the nic seems to be running fine in device manager.

Great link, but I don't think it applies here. The TCP/IP stack shouldn't be "trashed" if it's a fresh install. IMO..the problem resides @ the router.

It could be, just trying to cover all areas.

doesn't that just tell you how to file share but not internet share?
i did the reset thing and it didn't help.
My problem was that the PC wouldn't pick up the correct IP address from DHCP so it could connect to the router, to the internet, and any other PC's on my router.

Oh, I know. I wasn't meaning that in a negative way, just saying. 🙂 Even though it doesn't seem to apply here, it's still a great link, and I copied and pasted it for future reference. 🙂

What are your TCP/IP settings? This probably won't help, but you might try to disable the Firewire net adapter.

I didn't take it in a negative way at all. 😉Thanks for pointing me in the correct direction.

in tcp/ip properties under general, obtain ip address automatically is selected, obtain dns server address automatically is selected. under alt section, automatic private ip is selected.

for nic, under authentication, enable ieee 802.1x authentication for this network is checked, eap type is smart card or other card, authenticate as computer when computer info is available is checked, authenticate as gues when user or computer infor is unavailable is unchecked. firewall is off.

also, i don't know if this has to do with anything, but when i go to internet explorer and try to load something, instead of automatically giving the error page, it always says at the bottom "detecting proxy settings" first. i don't remember seeing this anytime before i reformatted, but i might have just overlooked it. i don't have proxy enabled either.

and i tried disabling 1394 connection but the internet still doesn't work.

should i be rebooting after changing a setting before i try it?

Just FYI, after you reset the router all of them will be blank and then it will pick up on the connected PC's later. I know this from my Linksys router, as I to have had to reset it a couple of times.

no, what ip address am i supposed to assign it? sorry, i'm not very good with networking stuff. also, if there's anything obvious i should have done that you don't mention, you might want to mention it, because it might not be obvious to me, heh.

yes, when i select connect directly to internet it says it cannot be completed and i have to manually do it. when i select connect through another computer, it lists the connection as bridged, but the internet still does not work.

Try 192.168.1.151 or .148. Not sure if it blocks things outside of its DHCP range or not. Use the DNS servers from your other machine (ipconfig /all), and use the gateway of 192.168.1.1 (or whatever is set on the other, working machine).

Sorry for the delay, I had to step out for a while. Open the properties on your NIC. Open the TCP/IP settings for it. Change it from obtain an IP auto........ to Use the following.....Then do what n0cmonkey said. Keep us posted!

It's got to be something whacked in the router settings I think. Otherwise, it would get an IP from the router. For some reason, the router refuses to give out an IP to that NIC. IS there a chance you have another NIC you could try...I doubt it's the Intel NIC, but it may be confusing the router somehow since it recognizes that NIC from the system before you did a fresh install.

Also, have you tried uninstalling the NIC from the Device Manager, rebooting, and letting it find it again?

I don't claim to know everything, but if it were the router wouldn't it do it to all pc's connected to it?

I believe I'd make sure the correct drivers for the NIC is installed and I seem to think it's software related.

i uninstalled the nic in device manager and when it recognised it again, it ran the network connection wizard. i selected connect directly to the internet and left everything else as default and it gave me and error and told me to do it manually or rerun the wizard with different settings. am i supposed to select something else?

i tried all the numbers you guys said and none of them worked.

i don't have any extra nics. 🙁

I think it's a client issue. I had something like this happen the other day (win2k3, Intel card). Not sure how I fixed it... It just started working. 😛

Try a different port on the router. Try a different cable (switch the working one with the not working one and test both). Remove the NIC from the device manager, reboot, and go through setting it up again.

Set it for DHCP, release, renew. If that doesn't work try a static address. IP: 192.168.1.151 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.1.1 DNS: 4.2.2.2 (or the one on the working PC)

If that doesn't work, try IP 192.168.1.148. If that doesn't work, I'm stumped. Again.
