These politicians have a million things to remember in a day are not going to remember net neutrality.

Freaking put the bill number in the letter. When HRXXX or SRXXX comes up they'll remember it easier.

I've worked in a state senators office, we get tons of mail and the 1st thing you skim for is if there are any references to bills. That pile gets handled 1st and sorted in support/not support then we deal with the other letters.

I'd imagine Members of congress do something similar and probably get 10X if not more in mail.

Yeah I'm feeling a little conflicted as to where their true intentions lay, but if they say they're onboard with stopping this I guess I'll believe them.

Your point? If someone here disagrees, they should leave. :p

I'm very cynical and believe that government won't do the right thing. The people in Congress give far greater weight to the desires of big business than they do to what is best for the people as a whole.

If this is not done control of the internet will be handed over to large telco providers and they can start charging for quality of service. Google as written an open letter about this.

The Internet as we know it is facing a serious threat. There's a debate heating up in Washington, DC on something called "net neutrality" ? and it's a debate that's so important Google is asking you to get involved. We're asking you to take action to protect Internet freedom.

In the next few days, the House of Representatives is going to vote on a bill that would fundamentally alter the Internet. That bill, and one that may come up for a key vote in the Senate in the next few weeks, would give the big phone and cable companies the power to pick and choose what you will be able to see and do on the Internet.

Today the Internet is an information highway where anybody ? no matter how large or small, how traditional or unconventional ? has equal access. But the phone and cable monopolies, who control almost all Internet access, want the power to choose who gets access to high-speed lanes and whose content gets seen first and fastest. They want to build a two-tiered system and block the on-ramps for those who can't pay.

So please, visit this website and sign the petition to try and stop this bill in congress. It's our duty to try and keep the Internet free for future generations as well as our own.
There is no stopping this.

It is a done deal.

Money and the Corporate Whores rule.

We chose this so must live with it.

Next time you vote think about the Corporate interests that own your choice of vote.

Enjoy

According to several magazine articles and people in the know.....this bill will not affect us at all.
There is enough bandwirdth to go around.
Besides that the bandwidth on the internet is not even being utilized to its full potential!

I wouldn't blame the OP, it is others who are using scare tactics to get people all up in arms, and they got the OP.

Basically the deal is the telcos have invested billions of dollars in building an infrastructure, and they want to offer different levels of service at different prices. So for instance youtube.com or google video offer streaming video, something that is vulnerable to latency problems. The telcos want to be able to go to Google and offer them different levels of service so they can pay to guarantee low latency. The telcos just want the opportunity to make a decent profit off the their investment.

You know, it's funny - when the PS3 comes out everyone will be bragging about how they're capitalists because they assumed no risk and made a quick buck by piggy-backing on someone else's investment. When here we have an example of true capitalism - companies that have assumed a large amount of risk and made enormous investments, and we fault them for wanting to sell it their way?

I signed it, but I feel guilty because I probably should have researched it a little more.

 No one 'got' to me and I'm not buying this as a scare tactic.

Just think about how open the Internet is right now. You can go to so many places and download so many things with little to no control from the ISP as far as content is concerned. Just look at what China is doing with censoring Google and such, they want to CHOOSE what their people can do and see on the Internet, the same can be said about these companies in America who want to make a profit by doing the same thing and perhaps offering packages as to what you may view. It'll seem small to begin with, can't rock the boat too much, but as time goes on just imagine what restrictions could be put into place down the road, you think the Internet will be like this forever..? Unlikely.

So don't just dismiss this as another false alarm, sign the petition and try to keep the Internet free, what do you have to lose? ..except your online freedom..

Thanks for getting this stickied BTW, keep 'em coming.
