Hi-
I'm not sure which of these many forums to post to but I have a rather peculiar issue-
I've been an Optimum Online subscriber for about 4 years now I would say. Never had any big issues but starting on 6/26/2010 however I suddenly get these massive lag spikes at different points in time during each day. My connection is normally 30mbits down and 5 mbits up and during one of these spikes it would suddenly go to a random number below 25 mbits down and 0-0.1mbits upload. The network belongs to me and every computer that can access the modem is one of mine. There have been no file downloading or uploading (or any bitTorrents running) during this entire duration. This typically happens twice a day with each blackout lasting at least 2 hours. The rest of the time the connection works fine. I get my full speeds (as per speedtest.net) although I do feel like there's some small amounts of lag.
I've called Cablevision tech support at least a dozen times now and they keep sending technicians over to check out the wiring and setup inside my apartment but each one either finds nothing or makes a fix that does absolutely nothing.
At this point I don't know if the problem is due to something on one of my computers or Cablevision's wiring (their techs report strong signal in my area and said that no one else in this area has this problem). Theft of service is highly unlikely according to customer service as using the service requires the modem that is registered with the company and that's behind my router with WPA2 security installed on it (the wireless is hidden to units that don't have their MAC address registered to it as well). Four technicians have come in this week so far and three of them have claimed to have looked over every piece of their wiring and equipment. They also confirmed there is no company maintenance in this area and no one else in this area is reporting such outages.
I'm running out of ideas here- porn and warez sites are blocked and not visited and SpySweeper does not detect any viruses (only the occasional piece of spyware which is also removed). I play some online games but do not use any third party programs. I'm not sure if I need to switch ISPs to correct this or if I need to reinstall Windows (I use Windows 7) as all of my computers are affected (I have one that is a fresh windows install and the connection on that is affected too).
I have 4 computers total, 3 desktops and 1 laptop which all plug into a D-Link DGL4500. The router plugs into my Ooma (which works fine all day even during a 'blackout', and for some reason I can't seem to figure out how to get it to work behind the router even though there have not been any problems for over a year with the router plugging into it) and that plugs into my modem. Everything has worked for years and this is really the first time something like this is happening. It started out of the blue and not after any major updates to software.
Please advise.
Thanks.
