I don't see how this could possibly even be useful. I can remember my passwords, and I don't want anyone else to be able to steal a universal ID that gives them access to my all. This reminds me of that scene in The Hitchhiker's Guide where Ford steals the head of the Guide's ID card, which allows him to pretend to be him in cyberspace.

Oh, and this isn't about privacy. You have no privacy on the internet.

That the left is authoritarian/totalitarian in nature and real liberals need to wake up and smell the coffee.
Seems more like an effort to protect people from getting thier ID's stolen. I need to read and hear more about this to come to any conclusion that it's the evil Left up to no good.

This. Considering we just spent the last couple of days bashing people for rushing to judgement without having all of the facts, I think we need more information to have an informed opinion.

So let me get this straight, this is about being able to opt for a Internet ID which won't be administered by the Government and people are screaming this is 1984?

I glanced over the article and I believe it said that you don't have to have one if you don't wish.
Yep, private sector is going to lead the way on it and it's not a true internet ID. Really it sounds like they are trying to get a multi-company universal log in system in place before Facebook connect becomes the standard.

ah see i can understand this, this is the kind of crap i see coming down the line anyways. i'm still not happy about having some sort of ID that follows me around. all this new technology is just making it so much harder to disappear.

Maybe it's my cynicism about our government but if it is, truely, a private sector initiative then why does the government even need to be involved?

Since government has solved all our other problems they do need to do something constructive to earn their paychecks. Putting them to work on something useless means they won't be screwing up something important.

But you produce crap and no amount of internet watchdogging is going to change that

admittedly there is a lot of crap. But I would argue every film you see isnt going to be a life altering event so impactful that it will stay with you for all your days. This can not be the bar for entertainment. sometimes a movie is just there to make you laugh for a couple hours and drink a beer. And thats ok too.

It's not even really about the quality of the content, even though that is a valid concern. The real problem is the DRM stuff that really only does two things:

1.) Interferes with legal use, and

2.) Makes piracy the easier option.

Fix that.

The funniest part of this is that the government says there wont be a centralized database of all of this information.

How exactly do you have a SSO without a centralized database?

The 4th branch of government filled with idiots who have no idea what they are talking about make up law with no congressional oversight - just what the Constitution had it mind.

"The government cannot create that identity infrastructure," Dempsey said. "If it tried to, it wouldn't be trusted."[/I]

I can't imagine an intelligent person would trust a business any more then they trust the government. I mean, I get that LOTS of stupid people put their lives on FaceSpace and UnderscoreBook but if they trust a company portrayed in a movie as being led by a guy only slightly cooler looking than Michael Cera they'll trust anything.

I agree and I like a lot of those things that aren't omfg life altering, that doesn't change the fact that I'm not going to pay for your shit or anyone elses shit. Especially overpriced shit. It's bad enough so many people charge for shit, but to overprice it? Come on who do they think I am?
