Internet Gateway issue

I was trying to get 2 PCs connected a particular PC

but i messed it up somehow when I inserted the WindowsXP Disc into it. Asked me whether I want some files installed and I hit YES, after that

so under Network Connection, I will not see a globe and computer icon anymore

and it seems like my DHCP isn't enabled on that PC
but if I manually set my IP Address, Gateway and Subnet Mask, it works
along side with my primary DNS and Secondary DNS IP

normally, via a router, the DHCP would assign it automatically,
anyone knows whats wrong with it? or how do I get my internet gateway icon back with proper DHCP usage?

well it did reset everything to obtain automatically,
but... after that, I can't even connect to DHCP, it says unreachable

and gives that random IP address, subnet mask and a weird gateway

Normally you should have 4 protocols installed.
1. client for MS networks
2. file and printer sharing
3. QoS packet scheduler
4. TCP/IP

I have a feeling you have excess such as IpV6...etc. Worse case scenario is run system restore utility back to a date when everything was fine located under all programs->accessories->sys tools->sys restore. Couldn't have fubar'd that bad =) Good luck.

Cos if it is that is an error

yeah some 169. xx.xx number , probably due for formatting also

but if I could figure out the problem, would be better in case I encounter such a thing again in the future

will try system restore

Do not try anything drastic! It ain't that broke!

That 169 addy simply means you didn't pick up a DHCP address.

If you run ipconfig /renew you can try again. If it still comes back with the same thing, go see if your DHCP server is working right.

it does not allow me to renew, all I can do is release
doesn't ping to DHCP until I manually key it in

my other comp work fine, only this particular one,
and yes I over did it,
coz I was having problems with some admin permission to access the files

fact is I did not set a password at all and it is link to the network,

This PC in particular can access the other connected PCs, but not vice versa

Have you played around with SERVICES at all, or installed software that might have.
Go into Services and check that anything mentioning DHCP is Automatic

i did not touch services,

but I did use a bootable Windows CD and try to set up the network again
which I think could be the biggest factor right now

but I'll go ahead and check if DHCP is automatic
