Internet Gaming Problem

Ok here is my problem, last week I left my computer on overnight downloading. When I woke up in the morning I tried to play Counter-Strike and the ping of the server I selected went to 2000 and my internet connection dropped by that I mean no web pages would open up for like 5 minutes. I tried other games and my connection drops whenever I refresh a server list.

My download speeds are fine and I can not figure this out. I called the cable company and they said it is probably the gamming server but I know that is not the proplem. I have formatted the computer since then and even tried a new Nic and replaced the cable modem and still no luck.

Please someone help me out here. I am desparate. I need my internet gaming.

• Strong passwords on your Windows installation's Administrator-class accounts
• Hardware and software firewalls
• Up-to-date antivirus software that's been thoroughly configured
• Frozen pizza
• Windows/Internet Explorer/WinMediaPlayer patching

ok, I just formated today (windows xp sp2) All updates. I have a router but I bypassed that to see if that was the problem and it wasnt. I have the windows firewall off. If you need any other info just let me know. I am killing myself over this. And thanks for the quick reply.

What are you running for antivirus software there?

I ran Norton with the latest definitions before the format and I was virus free. I also use the free homecall online virus scan. Could it be a virus on my cable providers network?

Out of curiosity, what Norton exactly, 2003, 2004, 2005...? It was genuine Symantec software and not, uh, "downloaded?"

You might want to post a full spec list of your system's hardware next, but it sounds like it could be an issue between you and your cable provider. Maybe they capped your account for overusing bandwidth or something.

Ok, I used Norton 2005. I know I am not capped because I can download at 450 KB/s. Very fast download speeds, I have the fastest they offer. I called their tech support and they said that it was probably the servers I was joining but I know this is not the problem. They had me exchange the cable modem today and still no help. It does this on every online game (BFV, SW Battlefront, Joint Ops, and CS) I can refresh the server list pings looks good. then I go to join a server and then boom ping jumps to 2000 and webpages won't load and the internet stays down for like 4 minutes and then just comes back up. Also when it is down I can still connect to the cable modem in the browser by typing 192.168.100.1

My specs are:
CHAINTECH VNF3-250
amd 64 2800
1 gig of ram
5700 ultra

Thanks for all the help mechbgon. I have been tearing my hair out. I am starting a new good job on the 14th and I won't have much time for gamming and I was going to do as much as possible before then. Now this.

Look in your system's Event Viewer and see if Windows is logging anything revealing. Control Panel > Performance & Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer, and there are several types of event logs there.

nothing in there that would relate to the problem. I also just tried it again, internet just came back up. and nothing logged. Also I tried to join a Enemy Teritory server on my other computer ( Laptop ) and it does the same thing. So I think I just ruled out my computer maybe. When I talk to my cable provider they say nothing is wrong with there system and that its mine, so they are no help at all. I am just stummped and very agrivated. www.dslreports.com go test your upload download speed. Are you joining a punkbuster server? Update PB if you are.

yeah, punkbuster is fine and the tech support had me do that dslreports test and I am getting great speeds. Its just any game that I try to play multyplayer drops my internet for a few minutes and I can't join. And web pages dont come up either. The strange thing is I can still connect to my modem during the down time. :disgust:

Off-topic... Viper96720, I had a question about SATA setup on the A8V Deluxe the other day, and tried to PM you about that since you have it working, and I got one of these. Am I on your Banned list, or are the Forums simply being strange?

My PM was off I'll turn it on. I got a K8V but I think the A8V sata controllers are the same.
Didn't do anything special just ran the makdisk.exe for the via controller since I used that. THen F6 during install and had floppy ready. If you get viaraid220dpackage. THe makedisk is in the driver disk folder. Then I just set the bios to make the drive the boot one.

try testing with differnt bandwidth speed sites... maybe you'll catch something

I hit the 3 Mbit speed so speed is not the issue. Thanks for the help though. It is only when I connect to online gaming that my internet connection drops. No web pages come up or anything. But I can still comunicate with the modem. and it only drops for a few minutes. enough to not let me join any server. every thing was fine last week and then one morning this started happening. I have had cable for years and never seen or heard of anything like this. I am just so frustrated:|

i wonder if there's a way to test bandwidth on different ports, since games tend to use their own. maybe your isp has those messed up, but didn't bother to check since your normal ports appear to be fine (80, 21, whatever).
