<< LOL@Russ. Go get 'em! People who are this scared shouldn't be using a computer. >>

I'm not scared. Files don't scare me. However it does bother and anger me. Do you think the average user is aware of these files? I guess I was preaching to the quire by posting this here, however. And I do apologize for sounding a bit, err, hysterical.

Do you think the average user cares?

<< I found a three inch section of penis in my temporary directory and I cannot delete that either. Damned Microsoft. >>

That was some funny sh!t!

This is one funny ass thread....go get'em Russ. This file has been known to most of us since IE 4.0....no security risk, unless you are doing something you shouldn't and someone catches a look in the file. No one but me, is ever on my pc.

Dont want to read the whole thread.. but you are way too paranoid. Those files take less then a meg (for me) and they dont even use up memory or cpu time (if they did, my cpu scale would be going off chart).

ToBeMe,

You got that right! I can count on one hand the number of systems I've had in for repair or upgrade that didn't have porn in the cache. EVERYBODY, even preachers, elected officials, and innocent looking little old ladies, at least checks it out.

Can I have that version of XP? It only takes 5.6mb?;)

<< Yeah. And did you know that all Windows XP packages come soaked with anthrax and various dangerous chemicals? >>

I had this script way back when I used Win98se made for the autoexec.bat file. Never did update it for win2k but by just changing C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\TEMPOR~1\content.ie5 would work

Don't waste money on stupid programs that stay they will clear evreything when this is what it does.
-----------------------autoexec.bat------
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\DELTREE.EXE /Y C:\WINDOWS\Cookies
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\DELTREE.EXE /Y C:\WINDOWS\HISTORY\HISTORY.IE5
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\DELTREE.EXE /Y C:\WINDOWS\TEMPOR~1\content.ie5

#2 On one of my computers these files were wasting several hundred megabytes of space. Keep in mind the disk was only 2.1 gigabytes. It made me a little pissed off.
>>

User error. Set the size of your cache smaller. Wow.

There was a program that looked up everything you ever visited in your life, what was the name of it let see if anandtech search can find my posts.

Eh crappy search, time for google.com here it is <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.fsm.nl/ward/">privacy 'bug/feature' in Internet Explorer3/4/5 (for important informatio about IE6, see history): Spider v1.16 (350 KB; Win32; ZIP)
This is the newest beta-version which supports removal of the URLs! </a>

Have fun

That program was interesting. You know what? Content.IE5 isn't the only directory with the extra cache. See:

C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\UserData\index.dat
C:\WINDOWS\Cookies\index.dat
C:\WINDOWS\History\History.IE5\index.dat

Why so many cache folders?

<< For some reason, Microsoft neither wants you to know about these files nor do they want you to delete them. They are NOT vital to the functioning of Internet Explorer. Index.dat is locked - you cannot delete or modify it from Windows, even if you aren't running Internet Explorer! If you go to DOS (boot off a floppy for example) and set the index.dat to zero bytes and make it read-only, Internet Explorer will still function perfectly. >>

No, Once you open IE or My Computer or any other program that uses any sort of IE derivative, Windows locks the file. Before then, you can delete it. I've deleted it in DOS mode.

All this IE stuff really isn't a big secret. How is it a security issue? WTF? If Microsoft wants to know what all pr0n sites you've visited, big deal. If they can get online passwords and such, simply don't use online banking etc. It's not that hard, people; gimme a break.

No big deal? Stop using online banking?

What kind of crack are you on to suggest that someone should alter their lives around the whims of a corporation like this?

And what happens if you just happen to lose your internet connection? Do you put your life on hold? LOL - that's a messed up way of life. You shouldn't depend on your computer at home to keep your life going. If it does (and you're not doing things like hosting webpages, etc), then you're probably in trouble. You're using MS's product. If you don't like what it does, simply stop using it. There are plenty of alternatives. People live their whole lives without a computer -I suggest you atleast learn how to do so.

I use online banking. Do I care if they have my password? No. But I don't rely on MS to help me get to my bank online when I can make a 10 minute drive to do the same thing. Don't be so dependant: it will bite you in the butt later.
