I've got a Vaio R505 laptop running XP SP2(actually my dad's laptop). Somehow his internet explorer got screwed a while ago where when clicking certain links that used javascript to open windows, etc. his IE would just close itself. There were no events in event viewer. Well, I tried searching all over and no one seemed to know of a solution so for the time being he just installed Netscape and that runs without any issues. He has to access certain websites that only support IE so I need to get IE up and running.
Well initially what I tried was reinstalling IE 6 but this was impossible. I modified the registry key per microsoft's instructions and changed the IsInstalled key to 0 for IE. Well, when I tried running the IE 6 installer for some reason it still knew IE was installed and said I couldn't proceed. I tried running the system file checker to no avail. THe other problem is that Sony doesn't give Windows XP CDs but rather their own recovery CDs so I can't do an XP repair install or anything that requires access to the XP CD.
Well, this morning I figured hey I'll install IE 7 and that might help things. Well, stupid move. When I launch IE 7 there are no menus up top like file, edit, etc. Also in the tab heading(tabs like forefox has) it jsut keeps saying "connecting...". Furthermore, the little text cursor never changes to an arrow if I hover over buttons in IE 7. IE keeps saying "connecting..." forever and it is constantly utilizing the CPU.
Can anyone please help me with getting some version of IE running on this computer? Are there are any good forums with MS experts? I'm having a real tough time getting any answers.
Thanks.
Edit: Ok, I found on another forum that IE7 has issues with some toolbars so I disabled the yahoo toolbar and IE7 is at least responsive now. I get the little arrow cursor and can type in addresses in the address bar. The problem now is that I get the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" for every page I browse to. Netscape runs fine so system files should be good.
