Internet Explorer Problem

This is a bizaare problem and it's only affecting Internet Explorer 5.5 sp1, not Netscape.

The problem is with forms on any site. For example, if I go to Google.com and type something in then press Search, that Internet Explorer window locks up for 15-30 seconds and then it goes through. This also applies on forms like in the forums here. After I type something in the Subject form field then click in the form field where I'm typing right now, this window locks up for 15-30 seconds before I can type. The same thing will happen when I press the "Post Thread" button.

This is non-existant with Netscape.

I've already tried re-installing IE5.5, I set my CPU back to default speed, scanned for viruses, and everything I could think of...

any ideas? I'm about to go insane

Try this goto TOOLS >>> INTERNET OPTIONS >>> CONNECTIONS
Take the check mark out from " Perform system security check before dialing " even if your on Lan ...ditch that check mark ...hope this helps😎
 
hmm, thanks but i can't check or uncheck that box (it's greyed out) as I have nothing in the list for dial up connections. any other ideas?
 
The problem is that your computer is looking for a DHCP server everytime you open a browser window. This causes the stall, and sometimes a freeze of the system for several seconds. Here's what to do:

1.) Open control panel
2.) Open Network
3.) Look for the first entry in the scroll box marked TCP/IP, that is associated with a hardware ethernet card (ignore dialup, AOL and VPN type bindings).
4.) Select it and press properties
5.) Select IP address from the tab
6.) Is Obtain IP address automatically checked? if so, change that to Define IP address and enter 192.168.1.10, and 255.255.255.0, into IP address and subnet mask fields respectively
This assignment of a harmless local IP address to the TCP/IP settings bound (connected) to your network adaptor, will stop the in-built DHCP services from waking up every 10 minutes to look for a DHCP server so that it can "fill in the blanks".

Also, if you are using Win98SE, go here: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q243/1/99.ASP to get an update that helps fix this kind of problem.

rpeAmp: unfortunately, I already have my network properties set up like that. that update on microsoft's site isn't what I'm looking for I believe? The internet works fine, it's just the forms that are giving me the problem. thanks anyway 🙂

any other ideas?
 
I still think that it has something to do with the PPPoE. I'll keep researching and trying to find some more information, because I also still have this problem. Doesn't occur just to forms, though. Everytime I open IE5.5 and type an address, the whole computer will lock for around 15-30 seconds and then it will just snap out of it. You might want to take a look at this thread: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,82084;root=chat;mode=flat I haven't read it yet, but it might have some useful info in it.
 
have you tried disabling the web scan feature of your virus scanner? May even try disabling your virus scanner all together for a few min. and see if that helps. I've had a problem with NAV eating up a lot of resources for surfing the net.😕
 
KAMI i experienced the EXACT same problem. try going to add/remove progs, uninstall ie. then choose the repair option when the box comes up. that might work. it didn't work for me, but a format/reinstall did the trick 😀
 
I don't have a virus scanner running in the background.

Quad, I'll try that when I get home from work but I'd like to avoid a format since I just did one a month ago.

edit: oh yeah, is it possible to revert back to 5.01?
 
Have you loaded McAfee VirusScan on your system before? It can cause some lock-ups with IE. (KB article here)

If you want to remove IE, you can try this little program:

IEradicator

that way you can install a fresh copy of IE 5.01 and see if that clears up your problems. You can grab IE 5.01 SP2 here, which MS just released.
 
Btw, I experienced the problem without having any antivirus program or using DSL, so I'm gonna say it's all IE's fault.
