Internet Explorer - How do you change default save-to directory?

I'm using IE 6.0, the latest, with Windows 2000 SP4. If I go to save a document (such as a PDF) to my HD, it wants to save in My Documents. This I don't care for because I prefer all my data on a different partition than my OS. I can't find a way to change the default location. The other day I changed the location manually for a couple of PDFs. After the first, it still defaulted to My Documents. But after 2-3, it defaulted to my preferred save-to directory. However today, it's My Documents again. Isn't there a way to change the behavior? I changed the properties of the shortcut to IE to start in my preferred save-to directory, but that didn't do the trick. Thanks for any help.

Under your user account properties change the location of your local path. Thereafter any application that would normally default to your user directory will go there instead.

Took a little looking around but I found it in Users and Passwords in Control Panel in my Windows 2000. Changed the default from blank to E:\ (my data partition is E: ), and I opened another instance of IE, went to a site, opened a PDF and did a Save and it still wanted to do it in My Documents. Did I do something wrong? Do I need to reboot? Thanks!!!

No it should be OK. I've checked mine and it seems to remember the last place I saved something from it.

I am running XP SP1 but I don't think that should make a difference.

I've found the behavior odd. I think I mentioned it above and if so, I'll reiterate: Before I changed the Default Path (a day or so earlier) I did save 2-3 PDFs in IE, having to change the path each time and then one time it remembered the new path, great! However, the next time I went to save a PDF, IE had changed it's mind and wanted to save again in My Documents. Seemed pretty whimsical to me. Like I said, after changing the Default Path, it still wanted to save in My Documents. I gave up at that point and erased the setting in the Default Path field for that user (me). Gosh, there should be an option in IE for default save directory like most sensible applications, but I've looked and looked and can't find any such thing. My Documents is Microsoft's invention, after all. I guess they think it's pretty sacrosanct, however I find it nothing but a problem across the OS and various MS applications, since I like all my data on my data partition.
