Hey guys. Newbie here, first post, have mercy please.

I need some help concerning Internet Explorer. Here's the story: currently using IE 6.0.26 on Win98 with an Ameritech DSL connection. While browsing, IE stalls for nearly 60 seconds...this happens about every three minutes. No trouble with other internet connections, such as RTCW online or ICQ...even Netscape works reasonably well (though slow). So I'm fairly confident that the root of the problem is IE and not my hardware. This problem happened even with my old version of IE, 5.x. Problem persists after the uprade to 6.0.26.

So I snooped around the Ameritech help page and noticed they recommend using their own customized version of IE. I don't know much about these customized versions. Should I be using them?

Any other recommendations? Have any of you seen this problem before?

Thanks for any help.

I don't think this has anything to do with being an Ameritech subscriber. I'm thinking firewall with a wrong setting (as in zonealarm). If you can use a dialup connection, does the same thing happen?

I've removed all the firewalls from my system. I've removed my router and zone-alarm. I'll have to try the dial-up connection, but like I said, I have no problems with other internet applications like ICQ, so I still believe its an IE problem. I wonder if I need to change some of the settings under IE.

Sounds like a Proxy settings issue to me.

From Inside IE Go: tools>Internet Options>Connections>Lan Settings.

Clear all the check boxes.

Surf around a bit and see if your situation improves. Let us know.

This is definitely a problem with IE. You may want to try to go back to some 5.x version. Sorry that I don?t really know much more about doing that, but that?s about all other people who were experiencing the problem did.

Try:

change Private API to DHCP in the Connections-Settings-Advanced window in the Enternet 300

morkinva,

tried changing the settings to DHCP....did not fix the problem. I'm thinking the only solution is to revert to an earlier version of IE.

...sorry about the blank.

Morkinva,

Thanks for that link. I'm going to try it a little later. I tried this: I put a Linksys 4-port router between my NIC and DSL modem and connect using the Linksys PPPoE. The result is NO PROBLEM, internet explorer works without stalling! So now my theory is that its not simply an IE problem, rather its a compatibility issue with IE and Enternet 1.34. Hmmmmmmm...

FYI:

took the Linksys router out of my system. Upgraded Enternet to v1.5. The problem is fixed, Internet Explorer seems to be working with no problems, no stalls. I've been testing other Internet applications like WinMX and Morpheus, they also seem to be working. So I guess it was just a bug between IE and my old version of Enternet. Thanks for the listen and help guys.
