Internet Explorer automatically downloading to temp folder

When I'm downloading a file IE 6 automatically downloads to my temp folder and opens it, if I want to save it elsewhere I have to right click and save as... is there a way around this? Wasn't like this before.

I think I messed up somewhere.

Can't help you...but while we're on the topic, how do you clean out that temp folder, and how long does stuff stay in it if you dont?

Wish I knew the answer. I posted a similar topic. My IE 6.0 usually ( ) wants to save to My Documents. This bugs me because I have a \Downloads folder where I want to save. I just created a shortcut to the Downloads folder in the My Documents folder as a workaround, and that works OK, cut I'd really like to force IE to save where I want to in the first place. I don't see anything in the options. I guess it has to be somewhere...

I'm pretty sure Internet Explorer remembers where you want to save things to, unlike Adobe Acrobat.

mitchafi If you're in Win9x just look in your Windows\Temp and Windows\Temporary Internet Files.
If you're in Win2K/XP, I don't know. There's a folder somewhere... I just right click on IE to clear it.

Wow... Internet Explorer... I remember that.

If my memory serves correctly, if there is a plugin configured to handle a particular filetype then IE will try to open it directly as opposed to offering a save dialog. I know of server side fixes and I'm sure that a client fix is lurking on the web somewhere.

Mine was already checked. I still have the problem. IE _usually_ (not quite always!) wants to save each successive download file in My Documents, regardless of where I last saved. Very nutty application, IE. I recall that the Justice Department and a lot of companies other than MS were ragging on MS majorly to draw the line somewhere in their integration of IE with Windows, so that people could comfortably use "3rd party" browsers. Did I state that right? I doubt it. Anyway, what I want to say here is they evidently didn't press the issue enough. I mean, I still can't find a way to direct the damn thing to save anywhere but My Documents. I NEVER use My Documents! I have a data partition! Don't need to clutter up my OS partition with downloads.
