Hi,

I got hold of a leaked download link of IE 7 Beta 1. So, just wanted to share my comments on it. First thing noticable after the smooth installation is the all new IE icon, that revloutionary e - icon, which according to a layman is synonomous with Internet. Its got a blend of shaded dark blue with a black tinge in it. Looks cool!

Then,
once IE is fired, the tabbed browsing is the only conspicious thing. Rest remains same. Tabbed browsing feature, though late, meets the expectations. Common short-cut key for a new tab [ CTRL + T ] is also implemented. A couple of options is thrown under the tools menu for phishing attacks and pop-up blocker. Also many options are added under the 'advanced tab' under the 'Internet options', for enhanced security.

Microsoft has promised enhanced security with this version, which has plagued the earlier versions, but we will know about it completely only when the final version comes out.

Conclusion:
Nice improvements, but still I would prefer Avant/Opera for the extra features they offer.

No new noticeable features other than tabbed browsing? Wow, and we waited how many years for this?

Hopefully they addressed how sucky their CSS rendering engine is.

They are going to address it in the final version of IE 7

Unfortunately, there's not much more you can do with an internet browser. All MS has to add is tabbed browsing (to cease the firefox crowd from using that as their main touting point, even though I'm sure you firefox faithful will still say your tabbed browsing is still "better" somehow).

I was once like you ;).

I like firefox better because of the extensions. Adblock, mouse gestures, bug me not, and forecastfox.

This is from Ars Technica...& it pretty much sums it up:


First off: Disclaimer. I haven't legally aquired IE7, it seems to have been leaked...as all semi-public MS betas are.

The toolbar is appalling. Like Firefox, it has the address bar and a search bar on the same row, together with static buttons. Much of IE6's customisability here is lost. Beneath this is the tab row, which seems to work identically to Firefox's. Beneath this is the menu bar (WTF?) and any customisable toolbars, or visible add-ons.

The UI basically sucks balls. They took everything which was bad about IE6, everything which was bad about Firefox and brought them together into one sucktacular package.

This is only Beta 1 and given MS' reputation for good and consistent UI, expect all this to change. It better.

IE7 also appears to ignore the hosts file. Think of this what you will, but I have not found how to disable it, thus I cannot access locally hosted websites which work through virtual hosts.

IE7 has a phishing filter, which may scare privacy advocates. You can report a site as dodgy, and IE7 will check EVERY URL YOU VISIT (this is not on by default, and asks to be turned on or off) by sending that URL to MS.

Windows opened by popups (such as target="_blank") are tabbed by default. Middle click also opens any clicked link in a tab. Tabs are not interfaced well, due to them being above the menu bar and any toolbars.

My first impressions.

At the company I work for, IE is our standard browser. I am working on a web site where we expect the users to print lots of HTML reports we have sent to the screen. I am hoping IE 7 is released by the time the site is complete, and that the advertised "fit to page" print option works well.
Have you tried this in IE 7? Does it work as well as the fit to page function in Excel (the best "print to x by y pages" implementation I have seen to date)?

I am assuming this is an example of thier "sucky CSS rendering". It must not be completely fixed yet.

The only reason I use firefox over IE, is because with Firefox, it is much harder to get spyware and the like. With firefox, you are always notified before something is ran or installed via the browser. If IE7 will ask you for permission for everything it does, I will definately make the switch back.
