Internet doesn't work anymore (All of a sudden!!)

Why doesn't my internet connection work all of a sudden? It just happened suddenly, I didn't even touch any settings and my internet doesn't work. I try loggin into MSN Messenger and all it says is that my the service is down or my internet connection is messed. and IE says DNS error and cannot open page and stuff. gives me the error page. but the thing is, I can get on the internet when I boot through Windows 2000 (I have dual OS). WinXP is giving me nothing but trouble...... and I know I'm the only one that can't get on the internet because the rest of the dormitory network is up and working and everyone else is able to get on the internet.

btw when I checked ipconfig it shows my external IP, not my internal IP behind the router! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif" border="0"> which means the computer is bypassing the router or something! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif" border="0">

this is what I got in cmd of WinXP

I'm on Win2k right now.

see how /renew gives me that error message?

thanx a lot

This might not be of much help, but I had a similar problem a few months ago. After checking all my settings and phoning my ISP, I still couldn't figure out WTF the problem was.

In the end, all I had to do was reset my router and everything worked fine. However, my entire home network didn't work, whereas you are the only one in your dorm that has a problem, so I don't know if this will work for you.

Try releasing and renewing your ip

The address your getting is an autoconfig address, it means you weren't able to get an IP from the DHCP server. Check to make sure your cards mode (full duplex, half, auto etc) didn't change on you.

Resetting your Router will not get you in trouble, nor will it change anything... Sometimes with occuring power surges or whatnot, it is necessary to reset your router... That is, if you have one .
