right now i have a usb modem connected directly to my pc. with internet connection sharing, i can plug my xbox straight into my pc via ethernet cable and share the internet connection, no problem. my question is, rather than plugging straight to the xbox, can i plug the lan connection into a wireless router and share my connection that way (so that my xbox gets hardwired into the router, and a laptop sees the network wirelessly). i'm pretty sure i can, but i just want to make sure of the specifics. would i need to disable the router's dhcp stuff so it's strictly a hub or whatever? i'm really clueless with this stuff.

thanks.

You'd be much better off getting a modem with a network port and hooking a router directly to that.

that is not an option.

i went into the router settings and set it to "use as wireless access point" but i'm not getting internet on it yet. going to try and look at some other settings.

*edit* in vista on my computer that is sharing the connection, under the modems "connectivity" it says "access to local and internet" but under the lan connectivity it says "access to local only"

The Router IP has to be changed to be compatible with ICS.

ICS has to be enabled for the Router to get the Internet.

Here there is an old page that explains for XP, the principle should apply to Vista.

right, need to change the router's ip address.

*edit* don't know what setting change did it, but now i get "limited connectivity" to the router, and i can no longer connect to it to fix settings. tried to reset it to no avail. sigh...

*edit 2* fixed that problem, got it back up. now i just need to figure out how to determine what the ICS ip should be for the router.
