I'v currently got a windows 2000 machine on a dial up connection(Walmart connect sort of AOLish but under 10 bucks a month). I have a Windows XP Pro edition connected to it with a cross over cable and pull files off the W2k machine. I am able to pull files off but have been unable to share an internet connection. I've installed a couple of proxies, WinGate and some free ones, in the hope that that will help but so far no cigar.

I can't figure out why, it seems like I am doing everything correct. The machines have the latest service packs and the XP can access just about anything on the 2k one but the net...Browsers won't coonect, neither will Norton Internet Security 2003. I have this installed on both machines and have disabled it to see if it was blocking it and it was not.

Any ideas?

It shouldn't be too difficult. Make sure to have the XP machine configured correclty (set IE to use a proxy or gateway and dns server, using the IP address of the machine with the connection). That should do it.

Keep in mind that ICS only works with DHCP. It won't work with static IPs. If you want static IPs (and you should, it's simpler) use something else like WinProxy, etc.

I set ICS up on the nonconnected machine and set it up to connect to the internet by another machine on the network if this is what you mean. Do I assign a fake ip to the nonconnected machine and just use the gateway and dns settings that I get when I am connected?

I never configure ICS on both machines... I don't know how XP works with ICS, but in the past, I used to have two Windows 2000 PCs connected in the LAN. One had a dial-up connection and ICS enabled. The other simply was set to obtain a IP address automatically (it asked for it to the PC with the connection) and that was it. It was up in no time.

Try this:

PC with the dial-up connection:
Set an IP of 192.168.1.1
Configure the Dial-up connection and enable ICS

PC without the connection:
Set it for automatically recevie and IP and DSN Server addresses.
Set the IE connection options to the default and uncheck everything in LAN Configuration
