I just had a recent battle with spy/malware. I am almost sure that all of it is gone, but I am having internet problems now. Many programs cannot connect ot the internet. They either say they can't find it or can't connect to it. Also, surfing the net works fine except for a few sites like gmail.com for some reason. I can''t connect to a few sites, I get the "The page cannot be displayed" error. Another site is the checkout line at the Norton website.

Any help would be appreciated.

what programs are you using to test your computer. Also i know there are some websites that you can goto for free to test it. Just a thought. But from my point of view. Better to back up the important stuff and format if its that bad... but thats just my 2c

Already ran Winsockfixxp, but that didn't do anything.

I may just try reinstalling the internet software. Maybe some of it got messed up during the removal of the malware.

Quite likely I would say. I agree with Indred though back up important files and re-install the best way if you've had a major infection, if re-installing your Internet software does not do the trick.

Check your HOSTS file to see if the sites you cannot get to have been added by some malware to prevent you from getting fixes. Also run an online virus scanner to check your system. http://housecall.trendmicro.com is good.

I've used several scanners, and all of them came back neg. I figure that either

A) The malware messed up my internet when I removed it. When it was present, whenever I would go to the sites I mentioned didn't work the malware would block it and make a few pops up telling me to buy or download random spyware remover programs. Now, I can just not access the sites.

B) During the battle, my Norton Internet Security got messed up. I tried to uninstall it, but it messed up during uninstall also. I had heard that improper or messed up removal of an antivirus internet security program like Norton could mess up your internet. Would installing a different version or Norton fix this is that was the problem?

I haven't got the chance to re-install my internet software (I'm at work right now), but I will when I get home and post if it works. Worst comes to worse, I backup the important files and just reformat/system recovery(or restore, whichever one is basically just wiping everything and then re-installing the OS.)

Nothing I did worked, so I reformatted the hard drive. Works fine now!
