Internet connection lockup dilemma

I have a problem with my internet connection. I am using a dialup modem, and some time the connection would lock up on me; I can't surf using that connection any longer. I have to disconnect and dialup again then I'll be able to surf. Also when it does lock up like and when I do try to disconnect it, it would hang for a minute or two when I try to disconnect it. It won't disconnect right away. I don't know what the problem could be. Yet when it doesn't lock up on me, I could disconnect right away.
So anyhow, I am using Win XP pro. I think it's the os that's causing this problem. I used win98 before and that never occured to me.
So anyone?

Hardware or winmodem? I have the best luck with hardware modem or possibly it is on your ISP's end. Did they make changes recently?

Please provide more information. What hardware do you have (MB, CPU, etc)? What pieces are you using in what slots? This sounds somewhat similar to some problems that I had and they were resolved by moving my Soundblaster and modem around. Even with Win2k assigning IRQ's I had conflicts until I hit the right placement for my PCI cards.

oh, I have a rockwell 56k fax modem.
Motherboard msi k7t266 pro2 ru
60gig WD
AUDIGY
Athlon XP 1700+
crucial 256 ddr

Anyway, I think I am using the wrong driver for that modem. Rockwell is out of business so does anyone where I can get the driver for it under xp

Don't know about the modem driver. Sorry! For me the only set-up that did not cause problems was to have the sound card in slot 3 and the modem in slot 5. Every other combo caused some sort of internet problem. Maybe it will work for you too. Good luck.
