a friend of mine is having some problems connecting to the internet. he has a desktop and a laptop, both can not be connected at the same time since there is only 1 port. when he connects the desktop he gets the following message: it aquires the network address and then says the connection is limited

i had him do an ipconfig /all in DOS and here are the results from the desktop, then the laptop. 1st thing i
noticed was from the desktop its missing the gateway, dhcp server and dns server.

he has a westell 2200 and is a single port ethernet or usb router. i guess its a modem/router.

any help would be appreciated. thanks.

here is from ipconfig/all

The autoconfig IP: 169.254.198.8 means that the desktop is not really connecting to the Router and can not obtain a Valid IP.

Something is wrong in the Desktop Network Settings, or the NIC is not functioning.

yes, make sure that the network card in the desktop is enabled. sometimes it becomes disabled. you may also want to update the drivers if it is really old (download off web using laptop, move it to a jump drive, install on desktop)

sounds suspiciously like a problem i was having with my cable modem awhile back, turns out that it would only give an ip address to 1 computer without needing to be reset. I went out and spent $30 on a 4 port router, plugged the cable modem into that and all 3 of my computers worked fine after that...
don't know if that will be any help or not....
