I'm helping a non-profit organization with their network setup. One of their guys tried to delete and reinstall some protocols and the network doesn't work as it once did. Ok here's the setup:

We have one windows 98 machine here that has a 56K modem connecting to the outside world, and one ethernet card for the internal netwrok. For some reason, when internet connection sharing is turned on, we are unable to access the Internet. We can hear the modem call in and log on, but we can't connect to anything. However, when we remove ICS, we can log in and use the Internet again.

My colleague wrote down the following protocols/adapters before he first changed the network settings:

Internet Connection Sharing
Internet Connection Sharing -> 3Com
Internet Connection sharing -> Dialup
Internet Connection Sharing -> Internet Connection sharing
IPX-SPX -> Dial - UP
IPX-SPX -> 3Com
NetBios Support for IPX/SPX
TCP/IP (home) -> 3Com
TCP/IP (shared) -> Dialup
TCP/IP -> Internet COnnection Sharing.

I noticed that in our new list of protocols/adapters that we have TCP/IP -> 3com and TCP/IP -> Dialup without the (home) and (shared) in parenthesis like we did in the original list. Could this signify the problem? I could find anything in the properties of these protocols that would allow us to change it.

The lack of (home) and (shared) seems to point to your problem as you suggested, but I'm not sure exactly why this is.

I would suggest as a start you remove ICS (Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs / Windows Setup / Internet Tools), reboot and then reinstall it and reboot. Then try it all again.

If that doesn't work then I'd suggest you remove all the protocols (as well as ICS), remove the NIC from the Device Manager and reboot. When it starts up again Windows should redetect the NIC and you'll need to reinstall the drivers. Then go reinstall ICS and it should all work OK.

That last option isn't as bad as it sounds! But if you don't fancy it and my first suggestion doesn't work, post again and I'll see what I can do to help :) Good luck!

By the way (you probably already knew this), but ICS should only be installed on the gateway computer (i.e. the one with the modem).
