So the internet stopped working in the family computer the other night. I thought it was due to spyware/viruses so I reformatted the HD and installed a fresh copy of XP. Now everything works completely smoothly except that the internet just won't work. I can't seem to figure out what to do. I'm sorry that I'm not more specific, I'll answer any questions necessary to correct my problem.

Check you LAN in Device Manager. If you haven't done so, recycle your modem. Unplug it for a few minutes and turn off the computer. If you have a router, unplug it as well. Plug in the modem and wait a couple of minutes then if you have a router, plug it in and wait a few minutes. Then turn on the computer. If that doesn't do it, call you ISP.

Of course the first thing they'll do is recycle the modem because that's what they always do. :) Actually, I think Road Runner support is pretty good

I have the same problem, My gateway desktop was working fine with COX highspeed cable internet and I installed a new 160bg harddrive and reinstalled Windows XP and haven`t been able to get the internet to connect. Every time I try it says "Can`t find connection" . Device Manager says everything is working and I took the cable off my laptop and connected it to the desktop and it still will NOT work. EVERYTHING I checked says it is fine and I even installed a PCI network card and it doesn`t work either!!!!! I kave FINALLY given up and just use my laptop to surf the internet any body git any ideas?

Have you tried running the Inernet Connection Wizard and the Network setup Wizard?

So I was on the phone with Road Runner for about 2 hours today trying stuff and the concluded that my network card just wasn't grabbing an IP needed. They suggested that I go down to the headquarters and get a USB adapter to be sure...bleh.

Huh? You're not using a router to connect to the Cable Modem?

Go buy a cheap router and use THAT to connect to the Internet and your Cable Modem. It's much safer. If you follow the router's installation process and can't connect your PC to the ROUTER, then you'll know you have a problem with your PC, your NIC, or your network patch cable.

Don't use the USB port on your Cable Modem. Stay with the Ethernet port.

No, I am using a router...the point of getting the USB connection was to see if it's actually my network card that wasn't letting me connect.
