The people that advocate a US/SK invasion of NK should really think about it.
It's like egging Fairfax county residents to invade Detroit inner city. It's such a POS of a place that most people would circle a quarter of the way around the globe to avoid it.

You know it's like when you see a pile of dogshit on the sidewalk you walk around it while holding your breath, instead of stepping on it?

I am just shocked that the International response is so weak or non-caring....A military ship was sunk and over 40 sailors were killed by the torpedoe of an enemy submarine.

How is that not an act of war??

Of course, if it was a US Navy ship that was hit, Obama would apologize to the other nation for allowing our ship to get in the way of their torpedo. Hell, he would probably reimburse them for the cost of the torpedo as a sign of good will...

Heh that's a little over the top but yeah I agree with you Obama's response is weak as hell. Granted this is a SK warship and SK soldiers that was sank and killed, the last time I checked US still has a large presence in SK and a slap on SK military is a slap on the US military.

We all know what's the deal, NK is backed by big bad China and Obama and the US got billions tied up with Chinese money and the cannot afford pissing China off. If this were some far away little country with nobody backing, some kind of strong words and military actions would have been taken.

Let's just wait a little until Obama gets the okay from China, I am sure Chinese is a little pissed with Kim and something will be done to take him down for this.

Or just stop all trade:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/asia_pacific/10144059.stm

China and South Korea re North Korea's largest trading partners, so this should hurt. The whiny North Korean government will probably cry, but let them.

One way or another, it's going to come to military confrontation with NK IMO. Remember that our cutting trade with Japan was as significant cause of our involvement in WWII. Granted NK has nothing resembling the Imperial Japanese Armed Forces, but given the blatant brainwashing of its populace I see a similar scenario emerging. I doubt NK will just sit still and die, especially if China joins in.

I for one am glad I am not a South Korean. Seeing as their lives are expendable to appease the blood thirst of the North. Here I had thought "civilized" nations had gotten past ritual sacrifices.

Reading the news makes me nervous to be living in Seoul right now. I'm only a few city blocks from the Yongsan Garrison, which would be at high risk during a war I'd imagine.

There's nothing we can do without China's help which is exactly what we're trying to get right now. China is NK's #1 friend, trading partner, and sugar daddy.

We're incapable of going to war against NK right now. They have probably a handful of nuclear warheads and there's a very good chance the regime would use them in the guise of defense. Think China would let us nuke them back?

We don't have the money, the manpower, or the will the fight them, nor should we. It wasn't our ship. These people are crazy and we can't do much without China's help until the regime dies. Once Kim is gone it'll eventually have to change, the lives of the Chinese and South Korean people will continue to improve rapidly while the peasants in the North have to worry about feeding themselves and being kidnapped.

On a positive note Japan has reversed course and is allowing us to keep our base on Okinawa. You chickenhawks need to give Obama some props for that.

Edit - Some of you just can't seem to grasp that our position in the world has been weakened, we can't just puff up and dictate what we want and expect everyone to jump in line. We need to regroup at home for a while and fix our very serious energy, economic, infrastructure, and yes governmental issues or we're fucking dead in the water.

Just FYI... NK has almost twice the total number of troops (active, inactive, paramilitary) that we do.. and less than 3 million shy of China. Just by the sheer number of people they have available to "expend", any military action against them will be difficult if we expect a clear victory.

Saying they have 3 million more troops than we do implied it. Apologies if thats not how you meant it

It's not like it'd just be us fighting them. I'm sure if push came to shove, every SK male over 16 would be involved. Shit, maybe they'll call back AzN. :p

It was not how I meant it, and the rest of the post made that clear. It was only a reference to the sheer number of people they have to throw into their cause, and that military action would be "difficult".

Wouldn't it be funny if China invaded North Korea and took over the place? China would get more land and the South Korean's would probably be a lot happier having a friendlier neighbor and trade partner? Then the US could remove more of its troops saving the taxpayers $$ and the people in North Korea would be free?

Win Win...

Seoul is well within artillery range of the DMZ. It wouldn't matter where you were.

NK also has enough artillery pointed at Seoul to hit every square foot with 3 rounds of artillery within 10 mins. So you'll definitely die fast.

Most of the NK artillery would have to be moved south across the DMZ to get range on Seoul. Only their big 203mm guns and the BM-27 rocket launchers can reach the capital from their side of the border and then just into the northern areas of the city. The North Koreans could do a lot of damage but Seoul wouldn't be destroyed as some claim.

I expect that it was China flexing it's muscle and the issue right now with the Koreas that caused the flip; not Obama/Clinton

NK people are already suffering so let's not start talking about dropping more bombs on their heads. How about we get a few spies/assassins in there and take out the heads of the serpent instead of the possibility of killing more bystanders. This is one of the situations that I think justifies such action.
